Glasgow to Fort William to Mallaig and back in one day?

I have three days in Scotland to 1) explore Glasgow for the first time and 2) do the Fort William to Mallaig scenic train ride. Is it worth spending 2 full days exploring Glasgow, leaving only one day to do 4 legs of train rides from FW to Mallaig? My concern is that it will be simply too much time sitting on a train, and that boredom will overshadow the beautiful scenery. (3.75 hrs to FW, then 1.5 scenic route to Mallaig, plus the same in reverse = 10.5 hours total). If I were to stay in Fort William one night, I would still end up spending 6.75 hours on three trains in one day. Has anyone else done this, and is it too much?

In other words, should I instead spend only 1 day exploring Glasgow, in order to have some time to slowly do the scenic train and then perhaps wind my way down through Glencoe somehow? (I will not be renting a car.)

For reference, here is my rather strange schedule -- I could use some advice! I spend a week in English cities, i.e. York, then I visit some castles (Alnwick, Bamburgh) and end up in Edinburgh on the evening of June 14. I have already been to Edinburgh, but I know it's so beautiful that it would be hard to immediately skip it and head to Glasgow. (So tentatively, that's June 15 in Edinburgh...) Then June 16, 17, and 18 must be divided up between Glasgow and FW/Mallaig, with the stipulation that I MUST end up in Glasgow on the 18th because I have a very early flight the next morning. The awkward thing is the likelihood of doing Glasgow, FW, back to Glasgow -- because it can be annoying to change hotels every night! :)

Please help! Thank you!

With all due respect to the people here from Glasgow, one day is enough.

I've taken the train to Fort William. It is a very scenic rail trip. Take it up one day, spend the night and return the next day.

Although.......think of doing this.....

June 16th--Edinburgh-Inverness by train, then bus to Fort William. Spend the night. (The bus station in Inverness is next to the train station.) The bus is a local that makes requested stops at small towns along the way and goes along the shoreline of Loch Ness.)

June 17--train to Mallaig, spend the day and return to Fort Wiliam for the night. (The Premier Inn in Fort William is a five minute walk from the train station.)

June 18--morning train to Glasgow, spend the afternoon exploring the city.

Or

June 16th--morning train from Edinburgh to Inverness. Explore Inverness in the afternoon.

June 17th--bus from Inverness to Fort William, catch train to Mallaig. Spend the night back in Fort William.

June 18th--early train from Fort William to Glasgow. Spend the afternoon exploring Glasgow.

No backtracking except for the Fort Wiliam-Mallaig part.

Wow, Frank II. I am not the OP, but this info looks really useful to me as I am planning a similarly truncated trip to the area soonish.

Thanks. D

Dont know if the times match up but on the return leg maybe Citylink from Fort William to Tyndrum and then resume train trip.. There two stations at Tyndrum, as well as the Green Welly cafe
That way you get to see Glencoe and the spectular journey over Rannoch moor and the view of Ben Dorain

Wow, these are some great ideas. Does anyone know what kinds of activities or events might be happening in Fort William or Glencoe? Are these places where I might run into fellow backpackers at a pub, or listen to live music? I don't want to be bored in my hotel room after dark. (I am traveling here alone.)

Any recommendations on some extra-cozy B&B's or hotels in the area? Somewhere to curl up and read a book by a fire would be so nice.

The Clachaig Inn in Glencoe will be heaving with outdoors folk.
It lies below the famous Aonach Eagach ridge.
One other over night place if you are outdoorsy, Loch Ossian, a simple stroll from the railway.
There's indoors ice climbing at Kinlochleven..

As you are in Scotland mid June,I would not worry about being stuck in a hotel room in the dark,it's light till 11pm ,then a couple of hours of twilight, and a new day is up!
