Glasgow - sports in September?

I'm hoping that our "resident Glaswegian" MC-Glasgow or someone else can help...

Will be in Glasgow for 3 days in mid-September, and I'm poking around looking at various activities. I see that Glasgow has at least 2 football clubs - the Celtics and the Rangers - but I am having trouble discovering when they play. I know so little about sport in the UK that I don't even know when football season is. US soccer season seems to last from February through October.

How do I find out the Celtic & Rangers schedules? I've tried the arena websites and the FC websites with no luck.

School me on UK football - leagues, schedules, etc?

Keep in mind this is a very casual idea - I'm not wedded to seeing a match while we are there.

And if the Celtics & Rangers are unlikely to have matches in mid-September, what other sports are being played while we are there? Anything we might not get to see in the US?

The fixture schedules usually come out over summer. September however is often the time for international matches, though the leagues will be on. I am not sure I would recommend Celtic (singular!) or Rangers for your first time at a football match, and definitely not if they are playing each other.

Those wanting to know which I may be sympathetic to, can remain wanting.

There is always Partick Thistle or Queen's Park. In the UK, football is separate within each country. So Scotland, England, Wales have their own governing bodies and leagues. If you want to see top flight in Scotland, it is the Scottish Professional Football League and the in that the Premiership or Championship.

However Glasgow has other professional sports teams. Glasgow Warriors (rugby), Braehead Clan (ice hockey), plus American football teams etc. You also may be able to catch the tail end of the shinty season.

Thanks for the Celtic (singular) correction. I'm afraid the Boston Celtics have made it hard for me to remember Glasgow Celtic.

"Top flight?" Since we're not true fans I'm not sure it matters.

We will steer clear of any matches where Celtic & Rangers play each other.

Now I am off to look up shinty...

Oh shinty looks fun to watch. Looks a bit like field hockey without the skirts!

ETA - extreme field hockey, by the looks of it!!!!

To help blend in, they are 'Celtic Football Club' or 'Rangers Football Club' when in Glasgow, or simply Celtic or Rangers. Best to avoid any of their nicknames...

And shinty is fun.

Luckily I don't know any of their nicknames. And I've been forewarned not to wear any C or R gear while in Glasgow. If it's pretty I might buy some to bring home tho.

The fixture list will come out on 17 June and there will be matches in September, though of course you will have to check if the dates coincide with your visit.

Celtic and Rangers are two of the biggest clubs in Britain and their supporters among the most passionate. Indeed, their rivalry has often gone beyond mere sport. It would certainly be a unique experience to try and see a game featuring one the clubs, but as MC suggests a derby between them could well be a little too intense for a first time visitor.
