Getting to Shetland

Hi all,

Thanks for the tips on where to stay in Shetland. Now I have figure out how to get to Shetland. I'll be flying out of Seattle, WA and the suggestion is to go to Aberdeen. I plan to take the ferry to Shetland from there. (It's more cost effective for me.) But airlines did people use from the US? )

My first trip in 2010 Tulsa to Newark, Newark to Birmingham, Birmingham to Aberdeen. Taxi to NorthLink ferry terminal. They will keep your bags. Then we set off in foot around that area. Back to ferry around 5 or 5:30 to board. We got a sleeping berth. Reserve ahead of time. ( my sister, cousin me on this trip)

This year (just got back with husbands). This was our route , we were on two different tours)

Tulsa to Chicago; Chicago to Newark, Newark to Reykjavik. Here for 7 days. Iceland air Reykjavik to Glasgow for 2.5 days, Glasgow to Kirkwall Orkney Logan air. Here for a week. Kirkwall to sumburgh logan air. Here a week. Home… husband wanted to do the ferry back. Lerwick to Aberdeen ferry, Aberdeen to Edinburgh via train. Edinburgh 1.5 . Then Edinburgh-Chicago-Tulsa.

Logan air flies to sumburgh from Glasgow, Edinburgh, or Aberdeen. If you don’t mind using up 1 day of travel, ferry was nice,

There is no easy way to get from Aberdeen home for us, so we chose to take train to Edinburgh, better flights home. Train is walking distance from ferry.

I originally planned to use the Aberdeen ferry, but several of my traveling companions get seasick, so rather than risking ruining a few days of their trip, we splurged and took LoganAir. An hour instead of 12 hours of unpredictable sea voyage was an easy choice. LoganAir flies from many cities on the mainland (and Lewis, Orkney) to Sumburgh and if you shop early, are not too expensive. Fares move up steadily. We rented a car, so Sumburgh was no problem. Without a car, you'd need the bus or a taxi, and you'd miss some interesting places.

My teenager and I were traveling as a couple independently, and being on a budget opted for the round-trip ferry from Aberdeen. We couldn't go far from Lerwick without transportation, but enjoyed seeing that part of the Main Island.
