Getting from Edinburgh to Glasgow on a Sunday in July

Hello! We will be flying in to Edinburgh from the US on a Sunday in July. I'm hoping to doublecheck my reading that the trains stop at 12pm on a Sunday from Edinburgh to Glasgow. Is this true? Our plane is scheduled to land at 8:25am. I am hoping that we can get ourselves to Glasgow and checked into hotel/drop off bags and explore to combat our jet lag. I'm enjoying reading all the ideas of activities in Glasgow. Just getting there is making me worry just a bit. My bro-in-law has not traveled internationally before so I am trying to make sure that I have a good plan in place to get from the Edinburgh airport to Glasgow on a Sunday.

Thank you for your local wisdom!

I'm not sure why you think that the trains finish at noon on a Sunday, but they don't. They run on to after 11pm.

Even if engineering work was affecting one of the routes then a) replacement buses would be provided, b) there are 2 alternative rail routes.

In addition Scottish Citylink coaches run a very regular inter city coach service, on 2 different routes between EDI and Glasgow City. One of those routes (imaginatively numbered AIR) runs 24 hours a day.

So it is totally impossible that you could not make this journey with ease.

The last Sunday train is 2330 from Waverley, 2334 from Haymarket

But to get that train you need to get a bus into Edinburgh to then take a train that goes past the airport - you'd be as well taking one of the different bus options directly from the airport to Glasgow. They all pull in very close to the terminal - which is your best option will depend on where you are heading to in Glasgow. The Air bus or the 900 are probably the best options.

Or take the tram from the airport. It is the airlink bus 100 you would take from the airport to central Edinburgh.

Good luck taking the 900 from the Airport to Glasgow- it only stops there in the small hours of the morning- from 2355 to 0500. The other route which stops at the Airport is the 902- a new route, a bit round the houses as it is really designed for the intermediate villages and towns in the Central Belt.

Two weeks ago, we went into the Haymarket station in Edinburgh and bought tickets from the agent for the 10:30 AM to head to Glasgow. It was very easy and it cost about 30 pounds for two adults and two children. It’s a little over a hour ride. There are taxis waiting directly outside the Glasgow train station that you can then take to your hotel.

I've taken the bus from Edinburgh Airport to Glasgow. It's easy. You pick it up in front of the terminal (Stop C) and it drops you at Buchanan Bus station in Glasgow. One block from the train station.

Much less hassle. One hour trip.

I checked and it leaves at :25 and :55 after the hour. They recommend reservations.

If you want to take the train, the entire journey will take longer since you have to get the tram or the bus to the Edinburgh train station then get the train to Glasgow. Plus lugging your bags between stops and types of transit.

PS- this is one of the Citylink routes which it is cheapest to book through Megabus (even after paying their £1 booking fee) rather than direct through Citylink- even as a last minute booking.

Thank you all for sharing your thoughts. I see the citylink by megabus. I'll look into where/how to get the tickets since we don't really know our time in advance getting through customs. (And I see more train times now, too. Not sure how I was looking before that I didn't see all the times.)

Regarding time spent getting through customs, it shouldn't impact you at all unless you have something to declare. After going through security at EDI last week, which was relatively quick, we just walked through the "nothing to declare" exit and were on our way.

Happy travels,
Gail

We have to make a similar transfer at the beginning of our journey in July.

By the time we clear EDI, we will have been awake for ~29 hours and travelling for ~17 hours, without even factoring in the time change. If I were solo, I'd probably do train or bus, but with my family in tow, I've opted to hire a private transfer from the airport to our hotel in Glasgow.

Including a meet and greet at EDI and the whole family + luggage, the transfer was £118. Certainly expensive compared to bus/train, but I expect my youngest to be pretty fried by then, and the idea of trying to get her to navigate public transit with her own luggage, etc. was a bridge too far.

We booked with Stonebank Travel, but we have no direct experience with them yet (other than booking), and there are a number of private transfer companies. Just another option.
