Frequent traveler, but first time in Scotland

Hi All!
I am an experienced traveler, in fact I am an American living in Hong Kong, but I have never been to Scotland (although yes for England). I am meeting my parents (both early 60's and in great shape) in Scotland April 21-May5 with my 2.5 year old son.

Our Itinerary is:
April 21-April 24 Glasgow
April 24-27 Edinburgh
April 27-May 1 Nairn (Highlands)
May 1-4 Oban
May 4 spend the night near Glasgow Airport
May 5 depart

We are staying in a hotel in Glasgow but otherwise in Airbnb's that are already booked.
My main questions are:
1) after renting a car at the end of our time in Edinburgh, I am really interested in many sites along the drive through Perthshire and up to Nairn from there. Any recommendations to help narrow it down? We LOVE history and great scenery.

2) Best things to do in Glasgow?

3) Is Iona worth it from Oban? Other things to see near Oban? We will be visiting Kilmartin Glen during our time there.

Thanks in advance!

The A9 north of Pitlochry is well worth skipping far better to divert over the Cairnwell to Braemar ,then the Tomintoul road to get to Speyside.

Linn of Dinn is a nice trip from Braemar , and maybe a walk up to Derry lodge.
Again for grand scenery, upper glen nevis and the trail up to Steall waterfall. Its about 30mins walk up

Yes, Iona is worth it! I would not go to Staffa with a 2 1/2 year old. The two choices for walks would not be a match for a child that age.

Hi, sanderskn,

As the members in your party range in age from 2 1/2 to early 60s, I have some recommendations for your time in Nairn:

Dolphin watching below the Kessock Bridge in Inverness

A visit to the Black Isle Wildlife Park in North Kessock, which would be ideal for your son. Part of it involves a petting zoo.

Dolphin watching along the Moray Coast, especially Spey Bay.

A walk along the Ness Islands

Although it's a fairly touristy thing to do, a boat cruise on Loch Ness would appeal to all involved, especially if you tell your son to keep an eye out for "Nessie."

A visit to the Elgin Cathedral, which is a fascinating ruin.

Be sure to visit the Museum of Childhood in Edinburgh. It's along the Royal Mile

Also, the People's Palace in Glasgow is a great place for people of all ages to learn about the history of the city. It also has a small botanical garden and a nice café. It's my favorite museum in Glasgow. And best of all, it's free, as are most of the museums in Glasgow. Check out the huge gold statue of Queen Victoria in the fountain across from the entrance, and The Templeton factory across the way.

Glasgow Cathedral and the Necropolis are also very much worth a visit. If you're visiting the Cathedral first, you can walk across the footbridge to the Necropolis.

As you'll be in Glasgow on a weekend, a visit to the Barras would be a lot of fun for everyone. It's a hodge-podge of tackiness, huckstering, and some of the best entertainment you can get for free. Also some of the most amazing junk stalls you'd find outside of a flea market. The Barras are open Saturday and Sunday. Afterwards, you could have a meal at Café Source, which is in the basement of St. Andrews Church (St. Andrews in the Square). It's a short walk from the Barras. Or you could have a short (or long, depending on whether your son is walking or in a stroller) walk on Glasgow Green.

I'll probably think of more, but for now, best wishes for a fun trip!

Additionally, for Oban, just north you could visit Dunstaffnage Castle & Chapel, or venturing a bit east you could visit Kilchurn Castle and St. Conan's Kirk. Just before St. Conan's Kirk is the Cruachan Reservoir (aka 'the hollow mountain'), which has an underground power station that you can tour (https://www.visitcruachan.co.uk/). Might be something different & interesting to do.

ALERT!!

Hi, Sanderskn,

I posted a suggestion for your time in Nairn. However, since then, I've found out more about the Black Isle Wildlife Park. My advice now is don't go! We took our son there about 20 years ago, and he had a great time petting the animals. However, it looks though the place has fallen on hard times. Check out the reviews on Trip Advisor.

Best to just go with the dolphin watching.

Personally, I would not spend so many days in Oban. It is a ferry port--a jumping off place to visit other sites. I would go to Mull and spend the tie ther.e. On Mull there are a couple of castles, a distillery, easy access to trip to Staffa and Iona, wildlife boat trips and more. South of Oban there are some interesting sites. Dunad and the Kilmartin Glen sites are well worth a visit. Iona and Staffa are fantastic and better than OIban in my opinion.

For me, the best thing to see is a museum I've yet to visit and that is the Riverside Museum. I visited its predecessor, but long to visit the new museum. The Cathedral is interesting, but not as impressive as others if you have traveled widely. I would recommend the Tenement Museum. The Pollock museum is very good.
