Free concerts in St Giles Cathedral, Edinburgh

As a member of the Scottish Clarinet Choir, I recently played in an hour long concert in St Giles Cathedral, Edinburgh. I had never been inside the cathedral before, despite visiting Edinburgh many times. The concert is part of an initiative by the cathedral to put on free concerts every Sunday evening at 6pm. There are also frequent afternoon concerts during the week. The cathedral is on the Royal Mile just down from the castle and would be on the route taken by most tourists and visitors to the city. I just thought I'd mention it here in case these sorts of free events are of interest. A diary of events can be found here If nothing else events such as this would offer the opportunity to rest ones weary feet for an hour.

Definitely check out free concerts in places like St. Giles!

Also keep in mind that you might be able to see rehearsals in advance of a later paid performance. We were lucky to stumble across the London Ballet in afternoon rehearsal for an evening performance at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London.

Good point about the rehearsals. Lots of visitors were wandering about while we were rehearsing. They were coming right up and peering over our shoulders which was a bit off putting, but I think everyone was having a good time.

Thank you! Anyone know if these continue during the summer months? Couldn't tell from the linked site.

Stewartandvicki, they do go through summer. A lot of groups from the U.S. travel and sing or play there, so any given day it might be one of them. I will be traveling with a choir performing there June 24. (I am not singing....)

Thanks, Travelmom. I should have guessed that, since years ago we were in one of those singing groups. Amazing experiences!
Have a great time.

Hi Stewart&Vicki
You should be able to move the diary forward month by month to see what concerts and other events are on throughout the year.
