Fly Fishing in Inverness

My family is traveling through Inverness on August 29, 2024. We would like to find a fly fishing guide company or individual to take my husband, a well-experienced fly fisherman, to "wet a line" in the area. We would prefer river fishing vs. loch and will need to rent the appropriate gear as we will not be bringing it from the States. He would be happy to fish for either trout or salmon. We have already researched the permits and restrictions in the area and understand, generally, the regulations that should be followed while fishing.

Several have already recommended Wes at "You Fish Scotland," which would be perfect for what we are looking for; however, they are not offering guided tours on our desired date. Can anyone suggest an alternate fly fishing guide in the general area of Inverness or 30 minutes in any direction? Thank you for sharing your experiences!

I was blessed to have had the opportunity to fly fish in Scotland many years ago. But I will be of no help to you. Just wanted to say tight lines.

Not to give your husband any ideas, but I managed to work a little fly fishing into many trips. Scotland, England, Slovakia, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Montenegro, Albania. I head back to Bosnia in May.

Using Hip Waders Everything fits in a tight little backpack so I dont rent. I use a 6 piece rod, so that fits too.

We're looking for the same, albeit a bit earlier in August - and same situation - well-versed fly fisher, rivers or streams (we say "cricks" in Montana, lol), and won't be bringing any gear. We're looking at "the Green Highlander" - https://green-highlander.com/. No direct experience but the online reviews look right . . . Good luck and hope you find a great experience!

Maybe drop the Oykel Bridge Hotel a msg.
Its a noted fishing area on the 5 local rivers and many lochs.
Thats a bit too far maybe.
The Alvie Estate near Aviemore would be worth looking at

Grahams of Inverness seem a likely source of info they sell country sports gear and permits for fishing

Ah, the Alvie estate, once part of the vast Ardverikie shooting and deer stalking estate. Ardverikie is still owned by the Pennington-Ramsden family of Muncaster Castle, Cumbria, whose holiday home Ardverikie was.

Alvie was later sold to Lady Carnarvon shortly after the death of her husband, Lord Carnarvon, who discovered the tomb of Tutankhamun in Egypt. It is now wholly independent of Ardverikie, having been sold several times since.
Large parties can now stay in the one time shooting lodge, and individuals can rent holiday cottages and caravans elsewhere on the estate.

Another estate with good fishing is Rothiemurchus. It's near Aviemore, south of Inverness. They have a rainbow trout fishery comprised of a couple of small lochs. The lochs are stocked and I've had fish in the 3 or 4lb range in the past. It's admittedly not great sport, as the rainbows are voracious eaters and will take anything. As well as the fly, they can also be had on a float rig baited with sweetcorn, amusingly enough.

As far as an avenue to seek out a guide, the main tackle shop in the area is Mortimers in Grantown on Spey. They sell permits for the wonderful beats on the River Spey and I'm pretty sure they will have contacts for a guided outing fishing.

The rivers Ness, Findhorn and Nairn will see a run of salmon and sea trout in season and may be more economical to fish than the really prestigious beats on the Spey.
