This is our first trip to Scotland. We're planning to fly into Glasgow and rent a car and stay 8 nights in Scotland. Does it make sense to pick a place to stay near Fort William for five nights and do driving day trips? Then move to Ayr and do day trips from there? Will we get a good flavor of rural Scotland? Thanks for any help and suggestions.
It makes sense if the places you intend to visit are close to your two bases. But as you don't say what you want to see its difficult to advise.
The thing to remember is that it can take longer than you think to get to some places. The roads are winding and wee. I recommend identifying some of the places that you would like to see and then use google maps or via michelin to plot some routes. Fort William can be quite touristy--not the Dells or Gatlinburg, but heading that way. :)
Thank you for the replies. We know we can't see all of Scotland in a week. We would like to see the country, the farms, rural areas, some lakes, mountains, villages, coastal towns, and castles. We would like to come away knowing that we have been exposed to and sampled Scottish life, history, and culture. We included southwest Scotland so we could visit the Robbie Burns sites as well as our ancestor's origination in Kirkinner.
Thank you for all of your help.
