First bicycle tour Glasgow to Edinburgh - advice?

I plan to take my new folding touring bicycle to Scotland next spring, maybe April. I plan to spend a couple of days in Glasgow, then bicycle the SUSTRANS route 754 to Edinburgh. (traffic free along a canal)

I think I want to stop and sightsee along the way, perhaps spend the night in Falkirk. Then on to Edinburgh for a couple of days, then take the train back to Glasgow.

I don't want to pack too much in this first trip, because I plan to return.

I live in the Pacific Northwest US, so damp weather won't be a problem.

Is 8 days long enough?

Does the SUSTRANSmroute follow the newly-opened (in April 2014) John Muir Trail? I have seen photos of a bike trip on the trail and it looked great. I think they biked it in a day, so dividing it in two with overnight in Falkirk should work. Be sure and see the Kelpies. We loved Glasgow, and Edinburgh was nice, especially walking up Arthur's Seat. We spent a week in Scotland in May and only had one day of rain. But be prepared for anything.
