Ferry to Isle of Skye with car in May

My friend and I are planning first visit to Scotland in late May and wanted to take the ferry over to Isle of Skye. We are a bit up in the air about exact date going over but do you need an advance reservation in order to get a car over (we plan on exiting via bridge). If we just "show up" is it likely we won't be able to get over or have a long wait? Thanks for any tips!

The ferry is from Mallaig. It helps in season to have a reservation, but you can drive up and will be put on the first available ferry.

if you do not have a reservation it is best to arrive in time for at least one or two sailings before yours.

You do not need a reservation, but in season be prepared for a wait, taking the bridge or turning back are possibilities.

There is another ferry to the Isle of Skye, shorter & smaller, from Glenelg to Kylerhea. The advantage of that one is if you get shut out, it's not terribly far to the Kyle of Lochalsh bridge so you can still enjoy Skye without being thrown too far off your trip plan. http://www.glenelgscotland.com/skye-ferry.htm

I've used all three ways to get across to Skye and have to say the one I enjoyed most was the Glenelg ferry.
