Ferry Service, Scotland to Holland

Hi folks ... We'll be spending six months in Scotland starting soon, and from there in September, would like to take a ferry to Amsterdam. Anyone know of lines going between the countries, or have recommendations?

No routes from Scotland you have to head to Newcastle or Hull.

Unfortunately it is only via Newcastle or Hull. Newcastle is easier to get to, Hull is cheaper. The ferry companies are DFDS and P&O North Sea.

Thanks so much! I've found a ferry line, DFDS as you recommended, that will take us there from Newcastle to Amsterdam, where we'll be met by friends.

We'll take a train from Glasgow, Scotland, but can't make reservations more than 3 months in advance. I am hoping that, with our one-way ticket from U.S. to Glasgow, we can show Customs in Scotland our ferry tickets out of UK to Netherlands, and they won't ask how we're getting to Newcastle! We're staying in Scotland just under six months, the limit, and understand the officials will want proof of when we're leaving the country. Do you think we'll be safe enough to show our ferry tickets from Newcastle as proof we're leaving before our six months is up?

I'm not an expert on this, but your ferry tickets sound like reasonable proof that you'll be leaving the country within the legal time limit.

Remember that Scotland and England are one country (i.e., the UK) -- at least until such time as they call another Scottish independence referendum. Even if that should happen during your stay and the Scottish electorate should choose independence (both big "if"s right there), it's highly unlikely it could go into effect before September. So, I think it is safe to assume you will be in the UK from the time you land in Glasgow until you embark from Newcastle.

Naturally, keep your eye on Brexit developments and any changes in EU regulations, in case you end up needing a visa for the Netherlands and/or other countries in the EU that you plan to visit. If something changes while you are in the UK, contact the US Consulate. See https://uk.usembassy.gov/embassy-consulates/edinburgh/
