Ferry reservations

We will be traveling to Islay on May 26 and returning on May 30. I see that there are not a lot of ferry trips so I will need to make a reservation to fit my tight schedule.

My question is: How far in advance should I make a reservation for my car?

It's going to depend on the route. Hopefully, Monte will comment on this specific ferry. Things to consider are whether or not there are any special events planned for the island or elsewhere that would increase traffic. Also, generally, if you have a regular rather than a truck or bus you can book later. I know when we were planning a trip to Lewis from Ullapool with a small bus our guide made a reservation at least a couple of months in advance. Remember it's not just cars, but lorries, busses everything has to go on the ferry. :) So, if your plans have firmed up, why not reserve the space?

Going out to Arran a couple months ago I probably wouldn't have but did for some reason.

There was a big funeral on the island and the ferry couldn't accommodate a fraction of the cars in the queue. Those of us with reservations made multiple shuttle trips to get the sudden foot passengers up to the church.

Exactly! Thanks Ed. I hadn't thought of a funeral! I'll attribute that to a basically optimistic personality.
