Ferry from Mallaig to Armadale

My family and I will be traveling in Scotland this summer. I plan to travel by train from Oban to Mallaig and take the ferry to Armadale, where we planned to have a car hire pick us up to rent a car for our time in Skye. In looking into the ferry however, it looks like it doesn't allow pedestrians. If not, does that mean we need to rent the car in Mallaig just to take the ferry? Is that actually the case? Any guidance is appreciated! Thank you!

Calmac allows you to book this route without a car. On their website, "passenger" means passenger on the ferry, not necessarily passenger in a car. I see how this could be unclear.

As you follow the booking process on line, you can select the option without a car. Although most people on the ferry passage I took had a car, there were several without. The ferries on this route are not large, so if you have a large family group, think about booking as soon as your plans are complete. Everything in Skye books up fast for the summer months, including the ferries.

Have a great trip!

You need to tick the 'without a vehicle' box on the website. However, you don't need to pre-book if you are going as a pedestrian, indeed I wouldn't bother.
