We are a family of 6 adults who are planning to take a day trip from Hotel Ceilidh-Donia, 14-16 Marchhall Crescent to Partick Station in Glasgow, to visit family, is it easier (cheaper) to hire a driver or to take the train and bus route that will take us 2 hours each way, walking, bus and train?
On the narrow question of cost- by train it will be £146.40-
6 x £5 day tickets on Lothian buses (tap on tap off, or with plus bus tickets) (very frequent service to Waverley), then £119.40 for 6 adults return on the half hourly Edinburgh Waverley to Partick direct trains (no change of train needed in Glasgow).
Although a through train you book it as a split ticket- 6 people return EDI-GLA £100.80, 6 people return GLA- Partick £15.60
However there is Scotrail Group Save for 5 of the 6 people (travel out after 0915)- you can't book it on line- only in person or by phone- gives 1/3 off, so
5 people EDI-GLA return £56
the 6th person- £16.80
plus the GLA to Partick fares (no group save applies) and the bus fares- Grand Total of £102.80
As it is a 107 mile round trip I can't imagine a car service will be cheaper. But it should, on an average day, be a bit faster.
However, irrespective of cost, might a door to door driver be easier hotel door to the family door- quite possibly so.
