We are visiting Edinburgh for a week in August and have already purchased our Military Tattoo tickets, reserved a hotel and airline tickets. I am wondering if we should purchase all excursions, tour tickets soon since August is a very busy month in Edinburgh? We have full days planned and hope to maximize every day. Thanks for any tips. Our hopes include the castle, Real Marys Close,Outlander day experience,Scotch Whiskey Experience, a day trip to New Castle and hopefully museums in Edinburgh.
I was in Edinburgh for the Tattoo before joining my RS tour this year. It was one of the highlights of my trip. You won’t need advance tickets for the museums.
You probably want to reserve tickets for the castle in advance. Get there right when it opens, get the audio tour and head straight to the top of the castle and the Crown Jewels. You’ll work your way down the castle while everyone else is going up and it cuts down on the amount of crowds you will encounter. Our guide did that for us and it was great.
When it gets closer to your trip - a couple weeks before- make dinner reservations. They can fill up quickly, although some restaurants stop taking reservations altogether in favor of walk-up only.
