We plan to visit the Falkirk wheel and then thought it might be fun to head out to ride the rails to see the scenery a bit further in Scotland. No real idea where to go...just thought it might be fun to take train or bus off from there. Wondered if there might be a circular route we could take. We would need to head back to Edinburgh as our accommodations are there. Any thoughts?
Thanks
Don't miss seeing the Kelpies, only a few miles from the wheel. The size of them is amazing. We always rent a car so I can't help with logistics.
You could take the train to Stirling from Falkirk and then take the train back to Edinburgh. Stirling Castle is quite interesting. I actually liked it better than Edinburgh. I also really enjoyed the Falkirk wheel. We took a cab from the train station to the wheel and then the public bus back to the train station.
Good idea. We had seen the Kelpies on a show and it will be very close so we should add that in too. Unique.
I had thought about Stirling too. Might be an idea. Thanks. Any other suggestions?
Falkirk has 2 stations- Falkirk High on the direct fast line to Glasgow and Falkirk Grahamston on the line to Stirling and the north.
Either is suitable for the Wheel and Kelpies- although High is marginally better, in my opinion.
You could go to Perth but as a 3 visit day, Stirling is ideal, being closer.
On the Glasgow fast line Linlithgow is another interesting place to visit. Mary Queen of Scots was born there at the Palace, which you can visit (now ruined).
Dundee would merit a full day visit in itself, that would be a very interesting day with lots to see and visit.
Another train day trip is North Berwick (not to be confused with Berwick on Tweed) for the seaside, the Scottish Seabird Centre, and boat trips to the Bass Rock- a seabird haven just off the coast. If you are lucky you may even be able to get a trip which lands on the Bass Rock.
Galashiels and Tweedbank in the Scottish Borders is another nice trip.
