Edinburgh to St. Andrews - take a tour or do it on our own?

We will be in Edinburgh in May, and plan to visit St. Andrews. Is 1/2 day enough time to allocate for that, or should we plan on a full day? Do we need to go as part of a tour, or can we be more flexible (our preference) by going there and back using trains/buses?

You can get there by train / bus. The train almost gets you there, and the bus takes you the final hop. The station you go to is Leuchars and then take a bus or taxi for the last six miles. Checkout Scotrail for times. It's over an hour to St. Andrew's no matter how you travel. I think that a half day is skimpy. And the folks on TA agree. Once you're there, you can tour it all on your own. I think it's easy to see the golf course, the castle, the university etc. Check out Undiscovered Scotland's Feature Page.
