Edinburgh to London Train Travel- September 16

Hi all -

We were planning on booking a train from Edinburgh to London on Saturday, Sept 16th, but looking at the National Rail site it looks as if engineering work is going on that day and there will be interruptions and alternate bus travel for part of the route. We've taken this train before and not interested in a long delay. Am I looking at this correctly? If so, considering a flight to Heathrow instead. Any thoughts?

You are looking at it correctly- the engineering work is between Berwick and Newcastle.

The correct times will be published on 24 July- what is in now is just wrong. You will either be diverted via Carlisle and Hexham, which is roughly a one hour delay, or be sent by bus between either Edinburgh or Berwick and Newcastle- a 60 to 90 minute delay.

The other rail option is to travel from Edinburgh to London Euston down the west coast. Those times and fares, according to Avanti, will be published on or around 26 July.

Hi, cjmaki57,

A lot will depend upon where you will be travelling after you reach London. If you will be staying on in the city, a train may be more suitable, even with the delay. If you are not going in to the city, and are travelling to a destination outwith the metropolitan area, flying may be a better option for you.

If you are flying out of Heathrow on a connecting flight, then flying EDI to LHR would definitely be your best bet.

Safe travels!
