Edinburgh to Arbroath

Is it reasonable to take a train from Edinburgh to Arbroath and back in one day? We would like to walk from train station to St Vigeans and Arbroath Abbey and of course eat a smokie!

So do you know if the walking from train station to the Abbey and to St Vigeans also doable?

Trains run at least hourly from Waverley station (plus a few extras) leaving at broadly 30 minutes past each hour, so very easy, the same hourly on the way back, with the last train back being as late as 2154.

I’m trying to get a sense of how much time it will take to walk from the train station to the Abbey and to St Vigeans and then back to the train station. I have distant relatives from the area. Thanks for info on frequency of trains.

Arbroath Station to St Vigeans is just under 2 miles walking, and Station to Abbey about 1/2 mile- so about 40 minutes walk to St Vigeans and 10 minutes to the Abbey, then about 20 minutes walk to the Harbour- the best place to get your smokie, and about 15 minutes back from the harbour to the station.

The Signal Tower Museum is also a good place to visit

It's a straightforward walk to St Vigeans from the railway station - plot out her route on Google maps. It's not the most inspiring of walks through housing, but there is a paved sidewalk (pavement) along the road for most of the way until the last bit where you pick up an unsigned track on the right that takes you direct to St Vigeans. Have a look here. This is a pleasnat walk tfollowing the burn through trees to St Vigeans. (Saves a bit of a dog leg around the road!)

If you are wanting to visit the stone museum in St Vigeans, check out opening times as it isn't open every day and is closed during the winter months.
