Do you have a recommendation of a restaurant in or near the city center/Royal Mile? Not necessarily fancy, possibly a pub, just something authentic, possibly with live music.
If you like Indian food, Dishoom would be a wonderful choice. We had a fabulous meal there last week. Rose Street is a good place to go to find a pub, with many to choose from.
Another vote for Dishoom. Be sure and make reservations.
Dishoom was only willing to take reservations for groups of 6 or more. We had lunch there, not dinner, and only waited five minutes for a table.
My trips to Edinburgh haven't been recent, but I enjoyed the World's End pub both times.

Dishoom is great, too, I've eaten at a London location twice.
Dishoom take bookings early evening for small groups
No music, but a lot of locals eat at one our favorite places in Edinburgh. Maison Bleue at 36 Victoria St. just off George IV Bridge St. just off High St. (The Royal Mile) and close to the castle. You can't miss the blue façade. Did not need reservations for lunch, bur reservations are advised for dinner. Small place, same ownership for years, and excellent food. Go to googlemaps.com, type in the address, and you'll be able to locate it easily. You can use the street view to "walk" to it before leaving home.
I liked Arcade Whisky and haggis bar. Don’t recall music and the main room is very small, but they had other space in the back. The food was good and it was also a great place to sit at the bar for a drink in the evening. On Cockburn Street.
In the event you don't care for Indian food (and I agree Dishoom is excellent), Howies on Victoria Street is a great place also.
