We will be staying in Edinburgh after a two week trip through Ireland. Can anyone recommend lodging that has washer and dryer access, or a place somewhat near the Royal Mile that can do laundry? I've found one laundry place that does a two-hour turnaround but must assume it is exorbitantly expensive.

There are quite a few hotels that offer self-service laundry. To name a few....Fraser Suites, Residence Inn, Staycity, Eden Locke, Adagio.
I've never stayed in any of them but I know they have laundry rooms. They are also aparthotels meaning each room also has a kitchen.
If you go to Tripadvisor and highlight "self service laundry" you will get a much bigger list.

After many bad experiences trying to do our own laundry (it always turns into a 4-5 hour affair ending with damp clothes) we've decided using our lodging's laundry service is well worth it. Many places will provide one-day service. Just email the place you're staying. That's the main reason we consider staying someplace more than one night.

The Whiskey Laundromat, just around the corner of the Royal Mile on Jeffrey Street, gets good reviews. Recent comments show £30 for a full load wash, dried and folded.

I stayed in Holyrood Aparthotel at the end of the Royal Mile and it was clean, newly renovated and had convenient amenities. They didn't have a dryer (at least not in the room anyway) but had a washing machine in room.

Many, if not most, AirBNB type places have one of those combo washer/dryers that does both, the latter very poorly. Expect hours to dry.
