Edinburgh Lodging

We’re back to planning our long awaited trip to Scotland. After a 5 night stay in York we’ll take the train to Edinburgh, and are planning on 4-5 nights there. Seems like there’s easily plenty to fill the time and we don’t want to be rushed as we’ve never been. I’ve looked at the RS guide and found some lodging listed comes up as permanently closed. I’m asking for suggestions for lodging, for 2 of us. We’re active 60’s ish and love sightseeing and exploring during the day but want to get a good nights sleep once we’ve gone back to our room in the evening. We don’t need fancy hotels but like well located and comfy. We’ve traveled quite a bit in our lives and enjoy B&Bs as well as hotels. Oh, We’ll be in Edinburgh at the end of April. TIA for your advice!

Take a look at the Rutland Hotel on booking.com. It's in a terrific location and features large, sparkling clean and luxurious rooms at a reasonable price. We particularly enjoyed the spacious bathrooms - one of the most heavenly showers we experienced on our own trip last month.

On a previous to Edinburgh we stayed at A-Haven Townhouse hotel and enjoyed it. The downside to staying there was it was not downtown and we needed to take a short bus ride into town. We could however walk into Leith and over to the Britannia. Since we took day trips, we just bought the full day bus tickets to get to Craigmiller castle, Rosslyn chapel, and to travel around town. The day pass was inexpensive. On an upcoming trip we have reservations near the train station at the Premier Inn Edinburgh City Centre Royal Mile since one member of our group has some mobility issues.

We stayed at the MotelOne-Royal, catty corner to Waverly Station, in May and June of this year (arriving and departing from Scotland). Though the hotel is in the middle of lots of hustle and bustle, I found it quiet. The location could hardly be better for access to public transportation, the Royal Mile, etc.

I have come to appreciate Premier Inns too (reliably a good value) and as someone else mentioned, there is one very near Waverly as well.

Hello,
I have stayed at the Kingsway Guest House 5-6 times https://edinburgh-guesthouse.com/. Located off quiet street, an easy bus ride from Royal Mile or Waverley Train Station. Buses run every 3-5 min. I like a quiet location in a neighborhood to get a good nights sleep. Excellent breakfast offered with home cooked specials each morning. Lizzy & Gary are exceptional hosts. I think you would really enjoy your stay.

We (67 and 64) stayed 5 nights in ALTIDO, York Place 2 and enjoyed it very much. It was easy to walk to The Royal Mile and there was a Sainsbury close by in one direction and an even closer Tesco in the other direction. There was a washing machine, which is nice on longer trips. The bedroom was separat from the living room, with a door that could be closed, which is nice when your sleeping patterns are different.

Another recommendation for the Rutland Hotel.

Good location to use buses and we liked the adjacent restaurant. Has an elevator and staff were very nice. We shipped our luggage via Luggage Forward to the hotel in advance of our trip because we were taking the train from London and didn’t want to deal with it. The hotel had it in our room upon arrival.

Easy to catch the tram to the airport from this location too.

Not sure of your budget. I just changed my reservation from the Fraser Suites to the Market Street hotel because I was concerned that many recent reviews coming in for the Fraser Suites were not good. The Market Street just lowered their prices for April and May and I found them comparable to the Fraser Suites, depending on which room you select.

The deciding factor for me was that the Market Street hotel is just across the street from the train station. So, the perfect location if you’re like me and don’t like to drag luggage too far.

We used an alternative choice for our lodging there for 5 nights. We stayed at the Courtyard Edinburgh West, on a university campus, with free parking for our rental. 1 minute walk to the bus stop and a 40 minute ride right into downtown Edinburgh so no parking charges and on the top of a double decker we saw lots of local stuff without the worry of driving or exorbinant parking charges. The hotel was WAY cheaper than other choices nearer to downtown.

It's quiet (at least it was in early May), really nice rooms, good bar/restaurant, but it's definitely not near anything. And when we left town on day trips we weren't fighting busy Edinburgh traffic. Highly enjoyed it for our purposes.

The Rutland is about 300 pounds/night, including tax. I got 7 nights at Hanover House for $950. You can do the math. The Locke is more.

Thank you all for wonderful advice. I ended up booking an AirB&B on Grassmarket that has a castle view. It’s well reviewed, and given that we’re staying 5 nights seemed like a little extra room is a good thing. This way we have a washer to use….traveling carryon only means we’ll use that washer!

We are in Edinburgh now, and staying at a fabulous B&B. It is called Kingsway Guest House at 5 East Mayfield. It is a Rick Steves recommendation and we love it! The proprietors are Liszt & Gary - a fabulous couple who are friendly and accommodating. Rooms are very clean and beds comfortable. Lovely location, with the bus line just a 5 min. Walk away from their door or you can walk into the center of town in 20 minutes with shops and stores all along the route. A laundry is also very close, cash machine, grocer, so it’s very handy. I would stay here again if ever in Edinburgh. Very reasonably priced. Also, they cook your breakfast to order daily and it’s very good! You can reach their site at www.edinburgh-guesthouse.com. Or www.facebook.com/Kingswayguesthouse. Have fun!
