Edinburgh hotel, not b & b

We really prefer a hotel because a B&B doesn't have enough privacy (not that we do anything weird, but...). I see from this website that there are lots of hotels in Edinburgh:

The question is how to choose which part of town we want to be in. I note from other postings that some areas are quite hilly, which is a concern because my husband has a heart condition and bad knees. Our interests are mostly historic, traditional, cultural. We're a "mature" couple, preferring fairly sedate and comfortable surroundings. We also plan to take the bus to Roslyn Chapel one of the days so location near that bus connection could be handy.

Any advice about which part of town is best would be appreciated.

I can't be any help with the hotel thing because I chose to stay at the Hedges, a B&B on Hillside Cres(cent). I do notice when I zoom in on the Booking.com map that London Road just below Hillside Cres has lots of bus stops.

I also plan to go to Rosslyn Chapel by bus. This link on how to get there includes information on bus services and should help you figure out where to be and when. The Lothian Buses link has a travel planner that shows that the departure point is quite close to the Edinburgh Waverley train station. When you work with it, you can see exactly how much walking will be involved. Note that when I tested it, the system didn't recognize Rosslyn. The spelling of the town is Roslin as listed in the instructions on how to get there. You will likely have a bus change along the way, from X37 to 37.

Have you tried Booking.com? After you get the results for the nights you will be there, you can filter them in a number of ways, including only hotels. Each result has a "Show Map" link. You can zoom out or in on the map to see exactly where the hotel is. You can sort them by distance which will put the closest ones to downtown first and also show how far from the center each place is.

Given your husband's issues , I would stay in one of the hotels along Princes Street in the New Town which is fairly level . The Royal Mile is a hill rising from Holyrood up to the Castle . The best way to see that would be to take a taxi up to the castle and meander downhill towards Holyrood . There is a good selection of hotels in the New Town , so check those out

Thanks, both of you! Your info & suggestions are a great help.

(I see that my spelling error (Roslyn) is a bit of a mashup between Rosslyn and Roslin, LOL.)

We stayed 3 nights at the Carlton House on North Bridge. The hotel was less than a 1/2 block off the middle of the Royal Mile and offered a breakfast buffet.

Roslin and Roslynn are interchangeable and even in in the village itself both versions are used.I would not worry too much about being near a bus stop for Roslin, as the connections within the city are very good and easy Day ticket costs £4 for unlimited use on buses from about 5.00am to midnight.

you will get all the info for buses here. The no 37 goes to Roslin and takes about 45 minutes from the city centre, it I about a 200 yard flat walk to the Chapel from the bus stop and there are two Hotels in the village where you can get a drink and a meal ,also a café in the area Chapel itself,
Once you decide on a hotel I will try and help getting you to the right bus stop to get to Roslin.
BTW did you know that the Roslin Institute (now part of Edinburgh University) was where Dolly the Sheep was created and you pass the old institute as you head into the village on the bus.

Thanks, UncleGus! We will check back once settled on hotel location. The New Town offers several good choices.

I stayed a number of times at the Inverlieth Hotel near the Royal Botanic Gardens. I liked it because it was quieter and off the tourist track. You can easily catch a bus up the hill to the historic sites. The gardens were lovely.

Many of the hotels don't have elevators. So, you might want to mention when you book that you would liek something without too many stairs.

Thanks, Pam, your expertise knows no bounds.

I especially appreciate the tip about the stairs. We usually ask for ground floor rooms if possible, but we do find some European hotels have zero ground floor rooms, and of course many don't have elevators.

UncleGus, we've booked in at the Inverleith Hotel in Inverleith Terrace near the Botanical Garden.
Any details about catching the bus to Rosslyn Chapel would be most welcome!

Thanks to Pam and UncleGus we had a wonderful stay in Edinburgh. The Inverleith Hotel in Inverleith Terrace near the Botanic Garden was ideal for our needs. We would happily stay there again.
The desk staff gave us flawless directions for Roslin by bus and were very helpful with other advice.

We stayed at the Edinburgh Central Waterloo Place Travelodge. We were two adults (mid-50s-60) and our 16 year old son.

Very clean, great value, quiet, elevators, located a couple of blocks from the train station. Easy location, we felt, for everything. We walked everywhere in we wished to see except to the Botanical Gardens and the zoo. Bus service was very easy to use for those two places. The folks at the front desk were very helpful and offered excellent restaurant choices. The hotel does not have a restaurant, but there were very nice places within easy walking distance.

Our stay (in 2014) ran 109 GBP per night, for a family room, with a king-sized bed and a twin. It was perfect.
