Edinburgh Hotel

We are spending three nights in Edinburgh this May. I have narrowed it down to two hotels. The intercontinental and Market Street Hotel. For those who have stayed at either of these hotels, what did you like/dislike? If there is another hotel in this price range we should be looking at, please share that as well. TIA

What price range are you looking at?

I just looked at the locations and while I am not expert on Edinburgh I've been several times including last summer for a few days and am going in 2 weeks again. I like the neighborhood of the Intercontinental on George Street. Last year and again in 2 weeks I stayed/am staying at the Ibis Styles Saint Andrew Square which is just around the corner from this one. I find the neighborhood very walkable and there are lots of good restaurants in the area. I walked from this location to the National Museum and also to Holyrood Palace so I found it very easy to manage.

If you've a mind to have afternoon tea one day, I had it twice last year at The Ivy on Saint Andrew Square. Not as good as Betty's in Harrogate or York but very delicious.

I stayed at the Market Street hotel in May 2023. Loved it!!! It was a little nicer than I needed, but I liked the super convenient location across from Waverley train station and in between the old and new towns.

Market Street Hotel has a 9.3 rating on Booking.com compared to 8.1 for InterContinental. I always try to find hotels rated 8.5 or higher. Of course, book directly with the hotel.

We liked the Market Street Hotel for the same reasons. Very nice and I asked for a quiet room and had the best sleep ever after flying in from Atlanta. Also when we stayed our room rate included all the drinks and snacks in the mini frig.

We enjoyed our stay at the Ibis Hotel in St. Andrews Square in New Town. It's a close walk to Old Town, Royal Mile, Edinburgh Castle, National Museum of Scotland, and the Royal Botanic Gardens, to name a few. Within easy walking distance to many good restaurants.

I appreciate all of you taking the time to comment. Thank you. I think that we will stay at Market Street.
Pam, thanks for your suggestion to have tea at the Ivy. I’ve added it to our to do list.

They make quite a production of it! Have your phone camera ready after they place the stand in front of you!

AND…. My recommendation is to eat any of the desserts that are in dishes (like creme brulee) first and save anything that is easy for them to wrap to go for later (scones, maybe cake if that’s a offered). They have leftover containers because it’s tough to finish all that food. Take some ziplock bags so you can bag up anything that might go stale once you get back to your hotel room! You’re welcome, lol!!
