Edinburgh Bagpipe Lessons

Is there a place a group of 6 can get an introductory/familiarization lesson on bagpipes?

The first place I'd investigate isn't actually in Edinburgh, but the National Piping Centre in Glasgow. Here's a link below to see if they could offer something, and you could travel through to Glasgow for it.

As a music teacher in Scotland, I was initially rather sceptical of the possibility of getting a taster piping lesson. I don’t teach pipes, but see a lot of piping practice in school, kids typically start on the chanter in primary school, progressing through goose pipes to a full set of pipes in high school. Pipes are expensive and fragile, and I didn’t envisage anyone being willing to let a bunch of strangers have a go on their pipes. Well it looks as though I was wrong! This guy Roddy The Piper offers workshops and taster sessions. Basically you get to have a try on a chanter (one chanter per person) and then a try a set of pipes.

You can buy a chanter online (eBay, for example) for $15. That's all it took for my wife to see I wasn't going to be a piper.

@Skyegirl - That link for Roddy the Piper looks absolutely awesome! Thank you for sharing it. Next time I'm in/near Edinburgh, I have to give this a go!

(As someone who plays a wind instrument myself - not with any great skill but with plenty of enthusiasm - I expect piping to be incredibly difficult and not something one is likely to be able to just pick up quickly. But I've always believed that the value one gains from playing an instrument is not necessarily proportional to the pleasure others derive from hearing you play it, rather it comes from the pleasure of the playing itself.)

David, I agree! I am a piano and clarinet teacher, having switched from playing trumpet in high school.
