Hi all,
I am looking at travelling somewhere magical for the Christmas season.
Does anyone have any thoughts on Edinburgh around this time - mid/late December?

Edinburgh is a lovely place to visit in general. I don't know if December would be my preferred time to visit- the days are extremely short (like 3pm sunsets) and it is very likely to rain. When I lived there there was a small xmas market in Princes Street Gardens near the National Gallery, but I'm not sure if this has expanded since. If you are there for New Years Eve, you can experience Hogmanay, which is a very large street celebration with performances, fireworks, etc, altho you need to get tickets in advance in order to be let in.

I was in Edinburgh in December last year. I normally enjoy visiting, but I found it overwhelming in December. It was so busy with people visiting the (huge) Christmas market. The pavements were mobbed with people and restaurants were heaving. It was impossible to get a seat on a bus in the central area (e.g. Princes Street). There was also a fairground next to the Christmas market, which added to the crowds. It was also raining and windy, which is pretty typical Scottish weather in December to be fair.
It wouldn't be my idea of magical!
I guess it depends what you are looking for.

We were in Edinburgh for four days/five nights in mid December 2023. We are from Seattle so we are used to short days and rain in December but we were lucky and there was a beautiful dusting of snow everywhere. We had a great time. There were hardly any crowds. The day we went out to visit Craigmillar Castle we had it to ourselves.
