Edinburgh and Explorer Pass

I'm thinking about purchasing the Pass for my upcoming trip in May. If we go ahead and purchase the Pass, do we still need to book in for a time at individual sites? In particular, we're interested in going to Stirling Castle. Also, has anyone gone to Stirling Castle and Edinburgh Castle? Or would you suggest we just visit one over the other.

Thanks.

I don't think you need to, but it is highly recommended that you do, especially for the more popular sites. In fact, the Historic Environment Scotland website notes that booking online gets you the best price for Edinburgh, Stirling and Urquhart Castles and Skara Brae.

We went to both. Both are nice in different way. If you do get the pass and go to Stirling Castle, and if you have a car, visit Doune Castle. It’s about 8 miles from Stirling. In September we purchased the annual pass at Edinburgh Castle since we were in country for 23 days and visited many other sites. With the pass we just walked up. There was no need to sign up for a timed slot. Since we bought the pass in country we just needed to show the receipt.
