We are considering doing a rail trip from Edinburg to the Highlands in either June or July. Can anyone suggest a good tour or even an itinerary we can do on our own. Thanks & Happy New Year!
Go to the Scotrail website for a map of the rail network including Edinburgh, with an”h”, pronounced Embrah.
Scotrail do a 4 days in 8 Scottish Grand Tour train ticket- https://www.scotrail.co.uk/tickets/combined-tickets-travel-passes/scottish-grand-tour
So Day one could be Edinburgh to Inverness;
[Day two the usual tourist things in Inverness]
Day 3- Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh [then bus to Portree, Isle of Skye- at extra cost for two days there]
Day 6- Portree to Armadale bus at about 0900 for the ferry to Mallaig, pm wildlife cruise or postal boat trip to Inverie, 4pm or 6pm train to Fort William
[Day 7- Glencoe by bus, extra cost or various other trips from Fort William]
Day 8- Lunchtime train Fort William to Glasgow, change for Edinburgh
The plan suggested by isn31c is excellent and would enable you to see a lot of the most scenic parts of the Highlands, and has the bonus of getting you across to Skye.
