Edinburg and/or Glasgow

We are planning a 11 night trip Scotland and Dublin.
We are interested in in seeing Edinburgh and Glasgow in Scotland.
Being that they are relatively close, would it be a good idea to make one of them a base and daytrip to the other a few times? Or you think it would be better to spend 3 nights in each one and then go to Dublin?

Thanks for your reply

Glasgow is easily accessible by train from Edinburgh so I would stay there and have a day trip.

Edinburg is in Texas.

These are cities with a substantial number of sights. I'd dig into what's available in each and see what makes sense. If you determine you have only one day's worth of sightseeing in Glasgow, I'd treat it as a day trip from Edinburgh.

In my view it's not the best idea to make multiple day trips to the same city. It's not just the time on a train (admittedly, not terribly long); you'll also have to allow time to get between your hotel and the train station in the base city every time you do that side trip, and then you'll need to travel between the destination train station and the first/last sight in the city you're day tripping to each day. I assume there are flights to Dublin from both Edinburgh and Glasgow, so you'd really need to travel between them only once if you set up two bases.

Full disclosure: I liked the cities equally; most people devote more time to Edinburgh (which makes it much, much more touristy).

I'm like acraven in also very much liking Glasgow -- in fact, I would say I prefer it to Edinburgh, but that is possibly also down to the fact that I know it a bit better by now.

Both are fabulous cities but do look into what types of sites are available in each --if you're not as much of a Mackintosh nut, you might not find as much to keep you in Glasgow.

But I would also say that you are really robbing yourself if you are spending time in Scotland and not any out in the countryside ....

They are really only an hour apart by train, so it's convenient, and Glasgow inches you a bit closer to the island of Ireland for your connection. (You could catch the Belfast ferry near Glasgow--Belfast is only a few hours by high speed train from Dublin--or probably fly from either city.) So I'd definitely stay overnight in both! Also, I'm replying to this because I second what others are saying about Edinburgh vs. Glasgow--I love Edinburgh very much (did a Fringe show there and I adore medieval architecture) but my husband vehemently prefers Glasgow, and that's probably true of a lot of people. (Edinburgh feels to him too much like fairy-tale "Disneyfied" Scotland while Glasgow is a bit more arty and down-to-earth, but it can also feel a bit like a standard midwestern small city--Rick goes over this in the Scotland episode which you can find on YouTube!) Hope that helps, nerd rant over!

When in Glasgow do yourself a favor and go to the Kelvingrove Art Museum.
