This is a bit like saying, I will be in New York City in two weeks what are the best restaurants? There are many outstanding restaurants in Edinburgh. It is the capitol of Scotland. :) So it would help to know what level of experience you are looking for. These are some of my favorites.

  1. The Mussel Inn. This is a New Town restaurant and is great for lunch or dinner
  2. Fishers I have had some wonderful seafood. Outside of Festival time they have Arbroath Smokies.
  3. Stac Polly is where my mom, dad and I went for our last meal in Scotland. It was wonderful.

There are many other restaurants in the city. Most recently one of the most memorable meals I've had in Edinburgh was at the Gardner's Cottage. Check it out.

Two that I remember particularly:

Lunch in the library cafeteria, not too far from the castle. We had stuffed jacket potatoes and soup on a blustery day. It was lovely and inexpensive.

The Sheep Heid Inn, said to be the oldest continuously operating pub in Scotland.

We discovered a place a number of years ago and we've had many memorable meals there. It is Maison Bleue at 36 Victoria St. which is off George IV Bridge St. which is just off High St. (The Royal Mile) close to the castle. Go to googlemaps.com, type in the address, and you'll be able to locate it easily. You may be able to use the street view to "walk" to it before leaving home. You can't miss the bleue façade. We've never had a problem being seated at lunch, but dinner reservations are advised. Small place, same ownership for years, and excellent food.

Mussel Inn Seafood Resturant on Rose Street. The kilo bucket of local mussels made for a memerable evening. And don't forget the Sticky Date Pudding. As we discussed forgoing desert a patron at the next table advised us that the pudding was a must and he was right.

The big art galleries in the UK nearly all have cafe style restaurants for lunch or a morning coffee stop.
They always have amazing home made soups, breads and cakes!
Those in Edinburgh always seem to have very tasty food.
