Economical suppers near Royal Mile in Edinburgh?

Hi, please help! Somehow I forgot my Rick Steve's Scotland book at home... :(

We are living in Edinburgh for a month in a flat and mostly doing our own cooking.

But we have family coming to visit for a few days, staying near the Royal Mile. Buses for them to/ from our flat at night won't work well. SO, do you all have any suggestions of economical places to eat supper within walking distance of the Royal Mile?

Thanks for your help!

I would look into pubs. Several have decent meals at good prices. Just look at the board out front, and check prices. Also, Witherspoon, a pub chain, has meals that are average and the prices are decent. They even have 2fer meals. I think there are 3 in Edinburgh.

Google Witherspoon in Edinburgh and 3 will show up. You can look at reviews of each online and see menu choices and prices.

if you look up South Bridge on google maps there are numerous restaurants on this street from noodle shacks, buritto joints to pizza place,Chinese and Indian food, more places than you can shake a stick at. and all pretty reasonably priced. There is a new pizza place opposite the Festival theatre, can't remember the name but I was in there a few weeks ago and it was pretty cheap, pizzas from about £5 and all cooked fresh. Also load of buse to all parts of the city from there.

Thanks for these further tips! I will use the Edinburgh Menu website to check out some of those South Bridge restaurants! And yes, my husband and I have bus passes and love the buses, but we are just trying to save my brother and sister-in-law the cost/hassle of returning to accommodation after dark when buses are fewer and they aren't really here long enough to figure them out.

If someone out there happens to have Rick's Scotland guide book and could possibly send the names of a few of his Edinburgh restaurant recommendations, that would be wonderful.

Thanks, all!

I am going to be in here tomorrow from about 2.30pm, just a very short walk from the Royal mile .A new place only opened a few weeks ago so myself and a couple of friends are going to check it out ,come for a drink if you want ,i will be the old short guy with glasses wearing a Pilsner urquell polo shirt.
One of the problems with the Rick Steves restaurant recommendations is that in like in any book they are going to be very quickly out of date ,on south bridge alone many places have had a change of use from shops to restaurants in the last year and several others have changed hands and type of cuisine they are doing.

Actually there is a new Burger Place (ByronBurgers I think) right opposite the Bella Italia that Tom mentions, never been in it as I really just don't do burgers, there is also a Pizza hut a few door down from Bella Italia on North Bridge. must be around 100 places to eat in that general vicinity.

Was over at the NMS for the Jacobite and Egyptian exhibtion today and had a look along the road Unclegus mentions. We had a very nice meal at the Yocoko noodle bar there, close to the NMS. There are two noodle bars on the same side of the street, this one much cheaper than the other, though there are no fripperies in the service.

I just thought of a good Thai restaurant close to Univ. of Edinburgh. Noodle 'n' Rice. Decent food, good prices. Now remember, I was there 4 years ago, so it could be out of business now.

Thanks, John. I appreciate that recommendation and also the Witherspoon pubs on George Street. All very helpful.

Just got back from a two week trip to Scotland, with three days in Edinburgh. Out absolute favorite place to eat in Edinburgh was the Tolbooth Tavern. We ate there twice, it was that good! It looks like your basic pub/tavern, but the food was EXCELLENT and the service was very good. Prices are very reasonable.

Also, just thought of Bill Hill. He is a tour guide for Edinburgh. His rates are reasonable and he is a charming gentleman. We thoroughly enjoyed his help while touring Edinburgh. Contact him: https://www.edinburghtourguide.com/

We ate at a place called Biblo's on Bridge Street, just off the Royal Mile. We each had a bowl of soup and shared a fish & chips dinner. It was delicious & pretty inexpensive. For a not inexpensive dinner, try the Witchery by the Castle. We had lunch there and it was very good. Fancy but good. We shared a meal there too (the waiter had to ask if it was ok since apparently not many people do this) and the chocolate torte we had for dessert was to die for.

Thanks, al! Family arrives tomorrow, so we will get to try out at least some of your recommendations! Along the way, I also learned about The Cafe Royal, tucked in behind The Register House. I stepped in there today and it looks beautiful and the food comes highly recommended as well and for reasonable prices -- off the bar menu.

Oh, and also stopped by and looked at the menus of Noodles and Rice, John. Yes, it's still there and also looks good!

Lot of choices! Thanks!
