Traveling solo as a senior to Edinburgh and the Highlands the first week of June. I arrive mid-day on a Sunday into Edinburgh and would like an itinerary for that day, along with the next two days. After that, I am on a Hairy Coos tour of the highlands. I love history, good food, gin, bourbon, and whiskey, as well as quaint shops and treasures. What would you have me do, along with suggestions for sustenance and travel cards!
The Castle, RY Britannia, Holyrood, Dean Village, Calton Hill, National Museum of Scotland, whisky (no ‘e’). Pay by tap and go for transportation.
I've visited a couple times, but my favorite thing to see is the Royal Yacht Britannia. Her late Majesty really loved it and it seemed like a place where she could relax and have fun. P.S, I also love Hairy Coos..
I'm a senior and was in Edinburgh for 3 nights at the beginning of my trip last June plus 2 more at the end.
On my arrival afternoon I walked around St Andrew Square, sat down next to the Paddington Bear statue and then had afternoon tea at the Ivy at 3P. Walked a little more afterward because I was so full, lol....along the Princes St Gardens to see the Burns Monument.
I spent 2 full days doing the National Museum of Scotland particularly to see the Scottish History floors with the Neolithic displays. I also enjoyed the National Gallery of Scotland that afternoon. The next day I did Holyrood House (with a timed entry) and enjoyed the gardens along Princes St.
I had been to Edinburgh several times before so skipped Edinburgh Castle.
On my return to Edinburgh I had a full day I had planned out a DIY walk from my hotel to Dean Village, then along the Water of Leith Walkway to the Royal Botanic Garden but it was pouring rain and I was too pooped from 3+ weeks on Orkney and Shetland to make myself do it, lol! I've got it saved for next time.
The other places I ate were Dishoom and Amarone, both recommended by a forum member. They were delicious. I also ate lunch at the National Gallery which was pretty good.
Have a terrific time. Do you know where you are staying?
These are my suggestions, as someone who used to live in Edinburgh:
History- Holyrood Palace, walking down the Royal Mile end to end (lots of nice little museums/historic sites, like Mary King's Close and Gladstone's Land), the National Museum of Scotland, Royal Yacht Britannia in Leith, you could also take a tour of the vaults (off the Royal Mile)
Food- my favourite is Howie's, they have a few locations. There are also many nice restaurants in the New Town these days.
Gin- Edinburgh Gin is great, and you can visit the distillery which is near Waverley Station.
Whisky- the best place for tastings is the Scotch Malt Whisky Society. Part of it is members only but part is open to the public.
Shops- good shopping in Stockbridge.
Good luck and have a great time!
There are so many things you can do and see in Edinburgh - What attracted you to the City and what places might you be interested in? I could throw out loads of ideas of things I would like to do, but they might turn out to be the ideas from hell for you...
You have already given some ideas . I would add
• St Giles Cathedral
• the Georgian House in the New Town with a walk round that areas as it is completely different to the Old Town.
• the ruined Craigmillar castle with its links to Mary Queen of Scots.
• Greyfriar’s Kirk and the statue of Greyfriar’s Bobby (read the sad story here.)
If you want to explore on foot, there are several different walking trails you can follow.
This one takes you from the castle to Holyrood House.
This one takes you around the Old Town. Map here.
This one covers the New Town. Map here.
This one covers some of the churches in the city
I found the Hop On Hop Off bus useful in getting to the Georgian House and the National Gallery. I also recommend St. Giles Church and Greyfriars.
