Dundee to EDI?

I'm in the VERY early stages of planning our May trip to Scotland (as in just purchased flights and sketched out a trial itinerary-few details as of yet). My question: Is it reasonable to spend our last night in Dundee, then return our rental car at EDI before our flight the next morning? The flight leaves EDI for LHR at 9:40.

It appears Dundee could be a good location as we (three adults) will be coming from Inverness and the North East 250 route (but I realize that maps don't always tell the whole story!). St. Andrews is a must-visit. We would likely spend our last two nights in Dundee if this seems doable. I am trying to reduce one-night stays while making sure we have a reasonable plan for arriving at the airport on time.

I wouldn't do it. You need to get to EDI 2-3 hours ahead of time, which means 6:30 to 7:30 am, and it's over an hour drive from Dundee (in a perfect world) and it could conceivable take longer. Plus there is potential time involved in returning the car. I would avoid the stress and worry about getting to the airport on time and just stay near the airport that last night.

As a caveat, I have not been to Scotland yet (I will be there in May as well) but have been traveling for years overseas and it's always a crapshoot staying far from the airport. There are just too many variables.

Yes, that's also my concern...a flat tire or accident along our route could derail the entire plan! Is there a recommendation for that last-night stay? (For instance, on our recent trip to Germany we spent our last night in Mainz and enjoyed the historic center while also being in close proximity to FRA.) I have considered moving our Edinburgh days to the end of the trip, but our arrival flight lands in Edinburgh at 5 pm. That makes me think it would be more time-efficient to stay in Edinburgh at the beginning of the trip--we can get accustomed to the time change, as well as get our bearings before getting into a rental car on our way out of the city.

I would not stay in Dundee the night before if your flight leaves 9.40. It would mean a very early morning. But it can certainly be done.

I've never travelled between Dundee and Edinburgh airport, but I've travelled between St Andrews and the airport many times, and for such an early departure I'd stay closer to the airport.

For your plan, I agree that you should not stay in Dundee the night before. (and I just spent six weeks in Dundee.)

There is another option. Return your rental car in Dundee and fly from there to London. Depending on the day of the week, Loganair has one or two daily flights from Dundee airport to London City airport (LCY). The terminal at Dundee is very small. No I mean small. One gate. Only turboprop aircraft.
