Dumfries

Before leaving Scotland, I will be staying in Dumfries UK for 2 1/2 day. Can anyone recommend any must see places to visit along the coast and is there easy access by bus to small fishing villages?
Second question ... How long will it take by train to get from Dumfries to Newcastle, England and is there a direct train? I tend to have a hard time with the train schedules. Can I buy a ticket from the terminal. Don't want to reserve until I am there. Any help will be most appreciated.

There are direct trains early and late for commuters but most other departures require a transfer at Carlisle. You can buy the ticket any time before boarding, but further in advance is normally cheaper. Or perhaps you're planning to buy a Senior Discount Card, to get ticket discounts on shorter notice. See www.nationalrail.co.uk.

A BritRail Pass also works for multiple travel days, allowing you to hop on any daytime train without booking. That pass offers a small senior discount. https://www.ricksteves.com/travel-tips/transportation/trains/britain-rail-passes

We spent a couple of days in Dumfries and had a great time: We visited medieval Caelaverock Castle, Threave Castle access by row boat, the very evocative Sweetheart Abby, and the John Paul Jones museum. Kirkcudbright is a seaside village. The Dumfries Museum has a huge Camera Obsura. Another Dumfries site: The Robert Burns House. This area is just as interesting as the "Highlands" without the traffic.
