Driving from Ullapool to Oban- looking for suggestions on places to stop along the way

I'm putting together a 10 day Highland roadtrip for my family in early August. We're doing a few days in Edinburgh, a night in Fife, then Inverness, then 2 nights in Ullapool to explore the Northern Highlands. We'll be driving from Ullapool down to Oban, which seems like a 4 hour drive, but I'd like to make the day of it and see as much as possible between the two towns.

Google maps has us driving the A835 to the A82 along the western side of Loch Ness and the western side of Ben Nevis. I'd love any recommendations on places to stop along the way; great viewpoints, short walks, delicious restaurants, cute tea rooms, small towns to stroll, etc.

Hi Sherilyns

I'd say that journey is more likely to take 5+ hours rather than 4. At that time of year you will be sharing the road with multiple rental cars and camper vans and progress will be SLOW. The scenery is wonderful all the way, so here are a few recommendations of places to stop.

  1. Urquhart Castle. A ruined castle on the banks of Loch Ness
  2. Fort Augustus is a village on the Caledonian Canal and fairly pretty with loch gates where you can watch the narrow boats moving through.
  3. Just before Fort William on the right hand side look out for the Highland Soap company. They have a wonderful cafe.
  4. You'll want to fuel up your rental car at Morrison's supermarket in Fort William, it's the cheapest fuel in that area.
  5. Fort William itself is much maligned, but a decent place to briefly stroll around.

I agree with the A835...u til you get to Corrieshallock Gorge ( Braemore Junction)then you could take the Coastal route ,easily the grandest scenery in the UK .
Torridon
Bealach na Ba and more.
Free museum at the NT at Beinn Eighe ,just before Kinlochewe.

The Inn at Baddachro is excellent.
Nice cafe at Torridon village ,info boards and free deer museum on the NT for Scotlands grounds.
The dangerous car park for the Gorge has thankfully been shut the new one a short distance on the coast road much better
If you are lucky the brand new info centre might be open
If you walk down to the bridge on the far bank suspended in free air is an overlook too

The A82 south of Inverness is no beauty in comparison.

Hi Richard
I was going to suggest that route myself, but personally in August I wouldn't fancy trying to make it from Ullapool to Oban via the Bealach in less than about 7+ hours! If they do select that route then The Midge Bite at Achnasheen is a good food stop.

Yes I know it's a trade off but a a long summers day taking the day to see all that is a day well spent.
I like the austere setting of the Aultguish Inn too, was there one late July day that felt more like November.

Actually you could do worse than do Ullapool to Fort William, that opens up visting Steall Waterfall and the view of "Scotland" in Glen Garry as you cut back south
It's a reknown view and there's a large roadside carpark.

These are all really helpful responses. Thank you!

I'm going to map out 2 routes with possible stops using your suggestions and then we'll decide in the moment if we want to take the coastal or inland route.
