Driving from Oban to St. Andrews

On Friday, 20 September, we're going to leave Oban and go to St. Andrews for the next leg of out trip.

We're thinking of driving rather than taking the train.

I'd appreciate any suggestions or advice re: interesting things to see/places to stop on the way.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

It all depends on what you mean by 'interesting places'....

There is Dunfermline with its abbey

Aberdour with its ruined castle

There is Falkland with its Palace (which was used as Inverness when filming Outlander).

There is a string of small and attractive fishing villages along the coast.

My goto website to answer questions like this is Undiscovered Scotland. Have a look at the map page here and follow the links to text pages with lots of photos and descrtiption. There is even a driving tour covering the area from Falkland round by the fishing villages...

A lot of it depends on interests and also on routes.

I would add Kinross to the above list, which could be via Stirling, could be via Perth.

In May we made the trip from Islay to Aberdeen via Anstruther and Stonehaven, both cute little towns with small harbors and good accommodations and restaurants. We made stops at the Red Lion Inn in Culross for lunch, St. Andrews Castle and Cathedral, Montrose Wildlife Trust, Fowlsheugh RSBP, Dunnattar Castle, Cullerie Stone Circle, Culsh Earth House, then flew out of ABZ for Shetland.
We started our trip in Aberdeen so we poked around the city at the start. September might not be the best time for birding at Montrose or Fowlsheugh.
