driving from edinburgh to inverness

I'm starting to plan my first trip to scotland. I'll be there 3 weeks in May, . I'm planning on flying into Edinburgh and staying for 4-5 nights before renting a car. My first driving leg is Edinburgh to Inverness. I'm allowing 3 days and would love to hear recommendations for stops along the way. I will stay in Inverness 1-2 nights - what to see there - where to stay. . Thanks so much

sue, what are your interests? There's loads of stops you can make for gardens, ruins, castles, fishing villages, historic sites, distilleries, ...

If you enjoy castles, Aberdeenshire has a castle trail. Craigievar and Castle Fraser are 2 of my favorites. Or walk the ruins of Dunnottar along the coast.

Good luck with your plans!

We need to know what things you like doing/seeing/ There are so many different options on the way to Inverness...

Inverness - the usual attractions are Culloden Battlefield (well woth doing the guided tour) and nearby Clava Cairns, believed to be the inspiration for Craig na Dun in the very popular TV series ’Outlanders’. There is also Fort George, possibly the mightiest artillery fortification in Britain, built after Bonnie Prince Charlie's defest at the battle of Culloden to control the Highlands and crush any future Jacobite rebellions. By the time it was finished, the Highlands were relatively calm and the fort never saw any action. There is a story, may be apocryphal, that one shot was fired by a jittery soldier on night duty who thought he saw a Jacobite soldier creeping up to the fort and fired at him. Next morning the guards found the dead body of a cow....

Alternatively there is Urquhart Castle and a cruise on Loch Ness.

Or if you want a quieter day, head for the Black Isle and Dornoch... .

Hello Sue
Sharing my one of my favorite resources when planning a visit to Scotland. Undiscovered Scotland's site is a treasure trove of information. If you click on the map section for Inverness it will provide a multitude of possible sites to visit.

If your driving route is the A9 the Highland Folk Museum, especially the crofter's village, is an interesting place to visit and the Undiscovered Scotland map will provide more details.

Happy planning! You will love Scotland!
