Driiving Routes and stops (Edinburgh - Oban)

HI all,

I have my 9 days all set for my trip to Scotland in June. The only portion I'm hoping for some advice on is my driving routes.
I will be driving from Edinburgh Airport to Oban. I arrive at the airport at 9am and renting a car so I should have some good time to drive and stop at a few places of beauty to stretch our legs and grab a bite or two along the way. I'll be staying in Mull and Iona for a few days and then driving from Oban to Onich/Glencoe area for a couple days. Finally I'll be heading form Glencoe area back to Edinburgh.

Any advice on driving routes to Oban with some stops to see naturual beauty and or charming towns along the way with a stop for lunch? And then the route from Glencoe area back to Edinburgh? Maybe see some things on the way out and go a different route on the way back?

Perhaps via Loch Lomand on the way to Oban and via Stirling on the way back?

Thank you so much for any advice shared.

Going to Edinburgh to Oban you'd probably be best just going the M9 to Stirling and then the A85 from there. It would be up to you to see if you wanted to go into Stirling or bypass it. Stirling is definitely worth visiting, maybe research your parking in the city centre before you go.

Crianlarach, Tyndrum, or Lochawe might be nice places to stop on the A85 after Stirling. It's a nice drive up that road all the way. There's lots of places you could stop to stretch your legs and take in some nice scenery.

If you were to come back the A82 for Loch Lomond that might be good. You could take a left into Balloch at the foot of the loch and through Drymen etc on the A811 back to Stirling and then M9 to Edinburgh. Or alternatively, carry on and pass through the centre of Glasgow on the motorway, and M8 to Edinburgh then. It would be up to you if you wanted a stop in Glasgow.

Thank you Gerry. That's very helpful. Since Oban is south of Glencoe, I was thinking of doing what you suggested in the reverse order. Does that seem fine? Thanks.

Yes, absolutely. The M9 and A85 route on the way out from Edinburgh is what would feel more "natural" to me, but it definitely works either way.

The alternative is the M90 - A86 - A85 route via Kinross, Perth, and Strathearn, especially if coming back via Glencoe and Doune.
