Does Google Maps Offline "Talk" to You

A friend is leaving for Scotland on Monday and has downloaded Google maps to her phone. She asked if she should just also get the GPS in the rental car because it talks to you and tells you which exit of the roundabout to use. I have been to Scotland so many times that I pay the $10 Verizon Travel Pass and use my phone (which I'm sure is Google Maps, but online). I know my way around now so I barely pay attention which is of no help to her. I told her NOT to get the GPS and that I was fairly certain that Google Maps offline would talk her through her journey and the roundabouts. Additionally, she is picking up the car at Edinburgh Airport and heading toward Skye, the Highlands, and ending up in Inverness. I don't think she'll get lost to begin with! Advice, please.

Yes it will talk to you and tell you which exit out of the roundabout to take. What it won't do is update traffic problems in real time, but that shouldn't be a problem.

As a side note, it doesn’t always count to exits off the roundabouts properly, so pay attention to the signs as well. On our recent trip to Spain, for example, it might say take the 3rd exit when there were only two, or would count a dirt path as an exit. Overall, Google maps offline worked extremely well, so much so, that we stopped using the Garmin.

One other item to note. Our iPhone has a USB 2 cable, but the rental car only had USB C ports, so we couldn’t plug it into the vehicle. Fortunately our daily drives were generally shorter. On the longer drive days we didn’t use it continually to save battery life.
