Distillery Options from Inverness

Hi! My mom and I are travelling around Great Britain via train in May and will be spending the last few days of our trip in Inverness as a home base for several tours. We had booked a tour that included a stop at The Singleton/Glen Ord distillery. Unfortunately that tour got cancelled (something about them not being able to book individual seats anymore? Only booked tour we've had that issue with so far) and we booked another tour that doesn't include a distillery. We are now thinking of taking an Uber to a nearby distillery from our B&B in Inverness on the day we arrive.

It looks like the Tomatin and The Singleton/Glen Ord distilleries are roughly about the same distance and cost from Inverness. Has anyone travelled to either/both of these via Uber? Did you run into any issues? If you have been to both, would you recommend one more highly? Neither of us are huge drinkers, we'd just like a nice sampling of whiskies in an old distillery. Are there any other nearby distilleries you would recommend? I read there is a newer one in town but we'd rather go to one of the more historic distilleries. Thanks in advance for any advice!

Hi, Sabrizzz,

I haven't been to either distillery so I can't recommend either. But I thought you might be interested in this Rabbies tour that departs from Inverness and visits Tomatin and Glen Moray distilleries. It takes you to a few other places (historic and scenic). Elgin Cathedral is gorgeous and well worth a visit and it also explores the Strathspey scenic area.

Rabbies tours come highly recommended on this forum, are very reasonably priced, and I have never heard anything negative about them. At any rate, it's worth a look. 😊 https://www.rabbies.com/en/scotland-tours/from-inverness/1-3-day-tours/whisky-journey-drams-and-distilleries-day-tour

Hi Mardee,

Thanks for the suggestion, but unfortunately we don't have enough time for one of those Rabbie's tours. We are going to take an AM train from Edinburgh and will have the rest of that day to explore Inverness and go to a distillery.

We are doing the RS recommended WOW Scotland Isle of Skye tour the first full day we're in Inverness.

We were going to do the RS recommended Happy Scotland tour that included Culloden and the distillery the second day, but it sounds like they are basically just doing private tours now. We replaced that tour with the Rabbie's tour that goes to Culloden and a few other places, which works out well since it eliminated a repeat stop at one of the castles. We are then flying home first thing the following day.

We are also doing the Rabbie's Outlander tour from Edinburgh, which I'm very excited about. They seem to have a good selection and good reviews.

Thanks!

can i suggest you stop off in Pitlochry on your way to Inverness, there is the Blair Athol distillery a short walk from the train station, stunning place and they do a good tour, but you do get access to many parts of the distillery without doing the tour.I am pretty sure there are luggage lockers or at least somewhere to leave your luggage at the station but check. There is the Edradour distillery about 2 miles outside the town but I don't think they are doing tours at the moment.

Thank you isn3lc and UncleGus for your suggestions!

I like the idea of stopping somewhere on the way to Inverness and saw Dalwhinnie was a stop on one of the trains, but it didn't look like there was a place to store our bags. Stopping at Pitlochry sounds like a great option!

I also like the idea of using the bus to visit one of the distilleries if we decide we want to get to Inverness first and then go from there.

Yes, I know several people on this forum have taken that tour and really enjoyed it.
