Nigel -

Totally with you on that, but you realise it might make us not as ‘down with the kids’ as we might think we are!

Jimmy Perez is a fictional character made popular on the TV series Shetland.

Anne Cleves is the author of the books in which Perez exists.

Actor Douglas Henshall portrayed Perez in the TV series.

Gentleman, a bit bemused, how neither of you UK residents have never seen the show.

EDIT: what kids? I think I’m older than both of you.

Hi Claudia -

I am, of course, joking. I do know who the people mentioned are - I’m not a complete philistine, despite never having watched ‘Shetland’ or reading anything by Anne Cleeves! There are so many ‘police procedurals’ on U.K. TV that you can’t watch them all. Plus I avoid anything that says ‘gritty’, ‘bleak’ or ‘disturbing’ in its description, so my cop prog viewing kind of begins and ends with ‘Death In Paradise’. Give me a Brett Sherlock Holmes, a Suchet Poirot or a Hickson Marple any day!

Ian

P.S. I’ve realised this makes me look like an old fuddy duddy. It’s a fair cop……..

Jeremy Brett was a brilliant Holmes. Cumberbatch’s portrayal also well done.

I first appreciated Brett in My Fair Lady even though he was dubbed singing… “ On The Street Where You Live. “

I stick with Midsomer Murders but will say liked and appreciated Shetland, Vera, Unforgotten, Happy Valley, and Broadchurch. And I do watch Law and Order re runs going all the way back to the pairing of George Dzundza and Chris Noth in the 1st season.

As I live in Hollywood was surprised one morning as I drove through the nearby Hancock Park neighborhood. Came to a stop sign and who crossed the street in front of me? Steven Hill ( DA Adam Schiff ) on his way to his synagogue. He looked at me, I looked at him. Brief nod of recognition from me.

Always thought he lived in NYC.

I like to balance them, but do enjoy the Ann Cleeves detectives, all three of them. Vera has recently finished on ITV, but I always thing the relationship between Vera and Aidan, and also Joe to a degree should have been the basis for a female Doctor in Doctor Who and a male companion.

Midsomer Murders, Death in Paradise and its two spin offs, I can box set, one after each other. Vera, Shetland, do need a break even if it is 24 hours!

For me

Sherlock is Jeremy Brett in the Granada version
Miss Marple is Joan Hickson in the BBC version
Poirot is David Suchet in in the LWT version
Barry Foster is Van Der Valk in the Thames version. The modern ITV version is in 'name only'

But that is not discounting the other versions. Both Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller were excellent in the role, and the recent ITV Marples are worth the time watching them.

I just adore Ann Cleeves's writing, and the Shetland series is my favorite of her books. I was sad a few years ago not to have any more Jimmy Perez. Matthew Venn in her newest series is pretty good, but it's the Shetland books I have really preferred. I will be interested to see her pick him back up and deal with him in Orkney, which I actually know a bit, as opposed to Shetland, where I have never been.

I also find Cleeves interesting whenever she does interviews,.talks about her background, etc. she is a real late-in-life achiever !

You all are too funny for words!

Nigel, You made me laugh aloud :) I did actually type Anne Cleves then corrected my spelling.

Ianandjulie, I am absolutely in the 'not down with the kids' group but happened to know about Shetland only because it's Scotland which is 'home' to my heart.

Claudia, Your reply to Nigel was my second laugh aloud moment of the morning. Hysterical LOL

Thanks all for sharing!

Shetland is only so big and it seems half the residents had been murdered during the show’s tenure. Hope Orkney works out. I am sad Vera has ended. I’ve only watched one episode of the last season so far.

In books and on TV the murder rate for most places are far higher than reality. Otherwise they would not sell. Latest figures for Scotland were 57 homicides in 2023.

Okay, you've piqued my interest. I just put a couple of Cleeves's books on hold at the local library.

I tend to tire easily of fiction, especially series, fiction, so I'm counting on your good taste, friends. Don't let me down!
