Day trips from St. Andrews

I posted a while back and really appreciate all of the wonderful tips!
My spouse is studying abroad for several more days. We are attending the Military Tattoo in Edinburgh this weekend (August 3) but I will be exploring St. Andrews from the 6th to 11th. Do you have any day trips or specific activities you'd recommend? I'll have a car, but am also open to walking tours, bus tours, horseback riding, etc. Anything that you think is a MUST SEE/DO/DRINK/EAT?

From the 12th-15th we will be free from school to explore! We need to be back in Edinburgh on the 16th to return rental car. Any recs on what we should do/where we should stay during a 3 day driving tour? We have a basic itinerary but are curious to see if there's anything we might have missed!

Thank you so much for your advice and input on our trip!

Cheers!

If you enjoy castles and/or gardens at all, I'd definitely put Glamis Castle on your list, either to go alone or in your 3-day driving tour with spouse. The tour inside the castle is guided; you'll want to check how long it lasts and how often they run. There's lots to see in the gardens, and the cafe is excellent.

If you tell us the general area where the two of you plan to drive, we may be able to point out some hidden gems that are not too far out of your way.

Dundee: We spent 3 hours at the V&A and 3 hours at the McManus, and in both cases we rushed. We also totally skipped the special exhibition at the V&A on video games. There are other apparently interesting attractions in Dundee that we didn't have time for, the Discovery Center and Verdant Works. If you are interested in all of those places you'd need to make two trips to Dundee. Bus service from St. Andrews to Dundee is extremely frequent.

There are some attractive former fishing village on the coast south of St. Andrewa. I liked both Crail and Anstruther. Anstruther is considerably larger. Bus service is decent; you should be able to visit both towns in one day, but I don't know about the schedule on Saturdays and Sundays.

If you haven't yet explored the Castle in St. Andrews you should do so. It has a bottle dungeon and a great mine that is fascinating. Also, look exploring the Fife coast. Falkland Palace is interesting too.
