Day Trip to Stirling

We are taking the train the Stirling for a Day Trip from Glasgow. We want to go to the castle and Wallace Monument, besides walking around town.
I’m sure I can find a taxi to take me to the Castle, but can I find one at the Castle or at the Wallace Monument? Are the Ubers in Stirling? Thanks!

You certainly won't get a taxi just passing the Wallace monument. You would have to call one but then a bus passes every half hour to Stirling railway station.

At least as of 11 months ago Uber did not have a licence to operate in Stirling.

That probably won't stop them from sending someone to you from outside the town.

I was at Stirling last month. I saw taxis bringing people to the castle so I'm sure you can hail one to bring you back down. (Of course, this doesn't guarantee anything.) I'd suggest bringing the phone number of a taxi service with you just in case.

It's a serious walk uphill from the town to the castle. But then it's a walk downhill from the castle to the town.

By the way, when I was at Stirling, the computer system went down and they couldn't take credit cards. Only cash.

I walked up from town to the castle (I used Google maps to get there) and while it was steep, I enjoyed the walk, especially as I got higher up. The views were just gorgeous. And definitely walk down even if you ride up. The walk down is easy peasy. No need for a cab to bring you down, even if you do use one to get up there.

Plus if you take a cab down, you'll miss stopping at all the sights along the way, like the Holy Rude Church and Lord Darnley’s house. Lord Darnley was married to Mary, Queen of Scots (and probably murdered by her as well). The house is now a coffee shop so it's a nice place to stop in for a quick bite (they also serve lunch and it is very good). I met quite a few locals there who told me they come in a lot. And the inside has a lot of atmosphere - it's an interesting place to stop.

Thanks! If the weather is OK, we will walk from the castle. We are going the end of November so it may be very cold and rainy. The cold won’t stop me from walking, but heavy rain will.

You can also walk down (better than up!) from the Wallace Monument to Cambuskenneth Abbey (inextricably linked with the Castle)- https://www.instirling.com/walks/cambusk.htm

This is the bus from Stirling Bus Station to the Wallace Monument- https://passenger-line-assets.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/mcgillsse/MBLB/52-timetable-20241028-74b0b38b.pdf

It is a 30 minute walk back from Cambuskenneth to Stirling Rail Station.

If you buy a Stirling plus bus ticket with your train ticket you get all buses in Stirling that day for £5.50- https://www.plusbus.info/stirling

So for instance you could also go to the [Battle of] Bannockburn Visitor Centre, or the Art Gallery and lakeside setting at Stirling University.

Ha ha, I totally get that. I was there in May so the weather was pretty nice for the most part.

Keep in mind that sunset at the end of November will be around 4 PM.

Yes, I realize that. It will be a quick trip. Get to Stirling at 10:30 AM and be on a 4 back to Glasgow. Just enough time for a “taste” of Stirling!
