Hi! My husband and I are taking the RS Heart of Scotland tour in October. The itinerary is jam-packed but we are looking to do a little "filling in" beforehand in Inverness and afterwards in Edinburgh. Beforehand, planning Rabbie's day tours of Skye and the NC500 route (fascinated by the area leading to Orkney but not enough time to really see it so this is close enough). Afterwards in Edinburgh, we booked a day tour to ride the Jacobite train (heard the route is beautiful and we are big train afficionados) and stop briefly in Glencoe. On our last free day, we were thinking about doing a Rabbie's Outlander tour (I am a big fan) but am struggling with this. There is also a Rabbie's day trip to the southern area that has Alynwick Castle and sees Hadrian's wall. Will the Outlander tour be more highlands scenery that we have already seen? Just wondering if we should go for a different area of the country than we are already hitting with RS and earlier Rabbie's tours.
Thanks for any help that you can provide in making my decision!
Rabbie's Alnwick Castle and Hadrian's Wall are seen on 2 separate tours. The Borders is a lovely area, lots of Mary Queen of Scots history and totally different landscape than the Highlands. Either tour would be an enjoyable day.
The Outlander tour is not taking you into the Highlands. One thing to keep in mind, I would expect more tourists at the sights on this tour due to the Outlander and Game of Thrones ties. That may affect your enjoyment.
A nice day out from Edinburgh is to Linlithgow, which is the birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots. You can tour the castle there. It's a charming town. We stopped in on our way back from seeing the Kelpies and the Falkirk Wheel. If your tour doesn't go to these, I would make it a full day. I don't know if Rabbie's or anyone else does this as an organized tour. I know Linlithgow is on the train line from Edinburgh.
Thanks for the responses! There is so much to see in Scotland. Good point about the Outlander sites being crowded. Hmmmm.
