We will be coming into the Edinburgh Airport and be staying at the Marriott Dalmahoy . Is there something close by we can see the first evening of our stay? We have a few evening hours and then till about 2pm the next day before our tour starts. Are there any local shopping areas, pubs, sights etc in that area? Suggestions? Is downtown Edingurgh far away from Dalmahoy? We will have to grab a cab or bus, don't have a car. Any & all suggestions are welcome. Thank you.
there really is nothing close to the Dalmahoy, lovely place that it is but it is isolated. there is a bus service at the bottom, of the drive from the hotel and the reception will be able to advise on bus times but from there to the city centre is at least 40 minute by bus. Nearest shopping would be either Livingston about 20 minutes or so by bus or Hermiston gate maybe 15 minutes by bus.
you could take a walk down to Ratho maybe a 20 or so minute walk. the Ratho inn there is very nice and sits on the canal. there is a Place across from the Dalmahoy .can't remember what it is called ,does a carvery style meal, cheap and edible but nothing special I have been in a few times after walks in the area.
Okay, this was fascinating to see if I could find you anything. And it seemed like every location that I found was aimed at parties for young children! It sounds like the best option is to bite the bullet and take a taxi or bus to the city centre. The variable is time vs. money. The zoo is out to the west. I've not been to it, but it's on my list for someday. So, if you like zoo's that would be an option for the AM. Another option might be to catch a cab or see if there is public transit to Hopetoun House. It is open at 10:30 and they would have a tea room for lunch. You can climb up very high and get views of the Firth of Forth and the bridges. I enjoyed my visit.
As for pubs, I would check out the Bridge Inn in Ratho. There maybe others, but there wasn't as much info on them.
Hah! posting at the same time....! Do you know anything about the Bridge Inn? It looked promising. And what was up with all the children's party places on the west side of Edinburgh! Is that where all the families live? :)
Pam
The Bridge INN is very nice it has a lovely beer garden that over looks the canal and food is very good.I was last in there aboiut a year ago.The place I mention across from the Dalmahoy is either a Toby Inn or Beefeater, both chain restuarants, the walking group I go out with often stops therefor a cheap Saturday afternoon meal ,it is quite handy as there is a bus stop nearby to get back into the city
The west side of the city is a very residential area and the road into the city splits the huge housing estates of Westerhailles and Sighthill.
Sorry I can't be more positive about the area around Dalmahoy but it is what it is.
