Couple Edinburgh questions

My in-laws will have 5 nights in Edinburgh coming up in June. They had a couple questions they hoped to get some guidance on.
First off, if there are any hotel recommendations near(ish) to the train station that info would be great to have.
Also, they are wondering if there is any 1 overnight side trip suggestions they could make by train. Appreciate any help we can get for them here! this is their first European travel so any general tips on the area would be great too!

A number of people on here recommend Rabbie’s Tours. You might google their website and see if there’s some place that might be of interest to them.

With 5 nights in Edinburgh they will only have 4 full days. Will they be coming from the US? Asking because they may have an afternoon of travel tiredness/jet lag which might mean they don't see a lot.

I'd recommend against an overnight as that will kill parts of 2 of their 4 days. Perhaps a day trip with Rabbies or one of the other companies will get them out of Edinburgh for a day unless there is somewhere in particular they decide they want to see. There is a lot to see in Edinburgh!

I'm going to Edinburgh in June for a few nights and have been looking at lots of hotels. I've settled on Premier Inn York Place based on a forum friend's recommendation but that is not real close to the train station. If they want to go 5* there is the Balmoral which is kind of behind the station. There is a more moderately priced Premier Inn just down Princes St from the station.

We stayed at the Ibis Hotel on St. Andrews Square in 2023. We are in our 70's and it was an easy walk for us to the Royal Mile. We walked past the Princes Street Gardens, across the Waverley Bridge, and past the train station. So perhaps a 10-minute walk to the train station? We walked everywhere from our hotel. The rate included a very nice breakfast buffet. I would recommend this hotel in a heartbeat.

How about a day trip to St Andrews? Train to Leuchars and then either bus or Taxi to St Andrews. It is an attractive town to walk around with a ruined castle and cathedral as well asa a sandy beach. Lots of shops to explore too and of courser their is the golf!

What are their interests? There are many ideas for day trips but we need to know what interests them.

Rabbie's is a great idea.

Just a warning about the Ibis Hotel on St Andrews Square...well not the hotel itself BUT....

I was looking at this hotel and was on their official Accor hotel chain website. I went to book and somehow wound up on a 3rd party booking site. I am careful with booking and have no idea how this happened. I noticed when they charged my card immediately in spite of the hotel stating the charge would be made on check in. Then I noticed a 399GBP "fee". I emailed the hotel who said "Its a fee from your travel agent". Yikes, I thought! I was able to cancel and get a full refund of the room rate and the "fee" within 48 hours. I say this to have you make sure your in-laws are on the IBIS website when the booking page comes up or even better to book directly thru their app if they choose this hotel. Looks to be a great location, although not particularly near Waverly train station.

The third-party booking sites are very good at pretending to be official hotel websites. I think the trick is to be sure the ".com" appears immediately after the name of the hotel or hotel chain. You don't want to click on a Google link that looks like this:

https://ibis-edinburgh-royal-mile.hotelsone.com

Instead, you want to see something like this:

https://ibis.accor.com... (Accor is the corporate parent of Ibis.)

And it's prudent to keep watching the URL as you click through a website. I've ended up off the correct path more than once myself.

@acraven: I was shocked at myself for getting duped. What is crazy is that I had the Accor app up on my phone and was making the reservation on my laptop at the same time so I could go back and forth looking at rooms. Apparently the back and forthing is what did me in!
