I booked tickets from Fort William to Liverpool on August 21, 2025, with a train change in Glasgow. After looking at my ticket, it looks like we won't have enough time to catch our train to Liverpool, when we get off at Glasgow Queen Street to Glasgow Central! Why would they book it if it's not possible? My ticket shows: Fort William 07:44. ScotRail. 11:33. Glasgow Queen Street 11:44.
11:49 Glasgow Central 12:04 TransPennine Express 15:46 Liverpool Lime Street. Our first trip to Scotland and we have no experience with trains at all. I don't know what to do if this is the case. I've tried contacting Avanti West Coast but no luck. I would appreciate any info.
The stations are fairly close to each other....0.4 miles. You can walk it in ten minutes or take a cab the short distance.
You arrive at 11:33 and depart at 12:04. It will be tight, but it can be done.
What kind of ticket do you have?
The second time of 1144 will be the free inter station bus #398. If the train is on time you can probably walk it as fast, but that bus is a good backup especially if it's raining.
You can also change at Dalmuir arrive 1108, depart 1117 Glasgow Central Low Level arrive 1143.
The Liverpool train leaves from the High Level Platforms.
See also the instructions about the walk on your other thread.
The official minimum connection time is 15 minutes. That means that, if this is a through ticket it is valid on the next train to Wigan at 1240, changing there for the frequent train to Liverpool- if you miss the direct train.
I have looked at Trainline for the times for that day.
The 0744 Ft William train arrives at a station called Dalmuir at 1108.
Depending on what ticket you've got from Ft William to Glasgow Central you'd change there, and onto a local train to Glasgow Central at 1117, arriving at Glasgow Central at 1143.
This is the lower level and there are lifts up to the upper level. Does the ticket say 'Queen Street' or 'Glasgow'?
There is a courtesy bus between Queen Street and Central.
At Glasgow Central use the escalators from Low Level to High Level - the elevators are out of order until 31 October.
Changing at Dalmuir sounds like a plan to me. I've never been there, but it was generally the destination of Hamilton Circle trains that I used to catch all the time. I was not aware a Fort William train would stop there.
@gerrym, the sleeper stops at Dalmuir. Funny realising some of the little stations in the Glasgow suburbs and West Highland Line that have direct services to London via the Sleeper, that stations much bigger in the south east of England, even in Greater London, don't have!
Dalmuir is an ok station, just what you would expect of a suburban commuter station, and the choice of QS or Central is which set of Glasgow's suburban sprawl you go through.
