Has anyone stayed in a castle lodging? Any recommendations for this that doesn’t break the bank?
The Stonefield Castle Hotel on Loch Fyne has reasonable rates. It was never a real castle in the sense of knights in armor -- it was a nobleman's country house built in 1837. It was remodeled some time around 1960-1970, mostly evident in the glassed-in dining room (giving all tables a great view of the loch), but most of it retains a sort of "Downton Abbey in miniature" aesthetic. The gardens are especially known for varieties of azalea. When we were there we found the plumbing in need of a tune-up as our shower dripped constantly, but overall it was a good experience.
My friend and I stayed recently at Tullock Castle above Inverness. Decent rates, has restaurant within and comfortable rooms!
