Car rental "REFUNDABLE EXCESS WITH SUPER COVER"

When renting a car, www.autoeurope.eu lists an option: "REFUNDABLE EXCESS WITH SUPER COVER" at
+ €6.95 /DAY. Do you recommend paying the additional + €6.95 /DAY for this coverage on an auto rental? thank you

Hi, Mrs. Carol,

How is the weather downstate?

Two questions:

1) Where are you renting the car?

2) How long is your period of rental?

Your answers will determine whether this coverage is worthwhile.

Best wishes,

Mike (Auchterless)

good morning, Weather is quite typical of January. I'd like to see a bit of snow sometime, but that may not happen this winter. We will be picking up the car at Glasgow airport to drive out to Kilmarten Glen for 3 nights, and returning car back to the airport. Thank you for all the info on taking bus from the airport (after we return the rental car to airport) and where to stay near the Glasgow Buchanan bus station. It's great when a plan comes together. Any thoughts on adding REFUNDABLE EXCESS WITH SUPER COVER
INCLUDES

+ €0.00 /DAY
(The total price with this coverage is: €398.14)

  • €6.95 /DAY (The total price with this coverage is: €418.99) to our car rental from Glasgow Airport? thank you for your time and wisdom, Mrs. Carol

I can’t answer your question, but thought I would mention another option for you to compare. I have used Auto Europe many times and have always been happy with them, but last September when we rented in Scotland I used Celtic Legend. https://www.celticlegend.co.uk/car-rental/ They had a better price than Auto Europe and they picked us up from our hotel in Glasgow to take us to the rental agency. When we returned the car in Inverness they drove us back to our B&B. You might consider seeing what they have to offer.

I have booked a car rental with Celtic Legend also, and they have been great to deal with so far. You do not pay anything until you pick up the car, and their price includes a Nav Sat device, which many (including Auto Europe) do not.

Don't get me wrong - I love Auto Europe and have been renting from them for the last 25 years but for the UK and especially Scotland, I think that Celtic Legend has more options and a better price.

Hi again, Mrs Carol,

I have to say that I am shocked at how much you have to pay for such a short rental period. I hired a car from Avis this past summer for a period of 31 days, and it cost about $1,050.00. I suppose that car hire rates are going up exponentially.

I didn't take the extra insurance offered by Avis, as my credit card covered the excess. And I ended up being billed for a scratched alloy (hubcap), for which Visa reimbursed me.

Anyway, you may want to check with AutoEurope to find out what that charge covers. It looks as though it covers the difference that you would have to pay between the basic coverage provided by AutoEurope and any damages which you may incur. If I'm reading it correctly, it means that you are 100% covered if there is any damage to the car. But please confirm that. As it's only about $7.50 per day, I would say take the coverage for your peace of mind. Especially if you haven't driven on the left side of the road before.

I'm surprised that they are quoting you the cost in Euros, as Scotland uses the pound. If you haven't already confirmed the rental, you may want to shop around for a better deal. Avis offers an AARP discount, for example.

Make sure that you book well ahead for Kilmartin Glen. It's not a heavily populated area, so there may not be a lot of accommodation from which to choose. If all else fails, you should be able to find something in Oban.

Best wishes for your holiday!

Mike (Auchterless)

p.s.: It's raining upstate today.

Hello,
Yes, prices for scotland rental cars are the highest i've ever seen. I just finished booking for July and paid more than expected for sure.

That being said, based on recommendations from this forum, Celtic Legend was the least expensive and included many extras. For instance, booking direct with anyone else was going to be a flat rate of 150GBP for an extra driver, and was included for free. Also the nav system, as mentioned, and only 10GBP total for a booster seat for the entire trip. They also include the insurance and liability insurance. I could have topped it up for a further charge, but chose not to.

Cheers,

In August we rented a car for 11 days in Ireland and I chose the full coverage insurance when I rented with Auto Europe. We had an incident that required us to buy a new tire. After returning home I contacted Auto Europe and I was told that their full coverage didn’t include tires and glass. Thankfully the tire didn’t cost too much, but I was annoyed because I didn’t see any mention of that.

During 16 weeks in Europe last year we rented 5 cars, and all were booked through Auto Europe with the exception of the car in Scotland with Celtic Legend. The CL car came with free navigation, but the other 4 cars all had Apple Car Play, which was just fine.

That price does seem high - I'm glad I booked mine early. I'm paying £736 with CL for 16 nights. I would suggest checking prices with Celtic Legend, though - they will send you a free quote and you don't even have to give them a credit card number until you arrive.

thanks for all of the information. I've confirmed our car rental with Celtic Legend in Glasgow, saving about 33% over Avis car rental.
