Is there a particular agency that anyone recommends? Also, my sister and I were in Ireland in October and were able to rent a mobile wifi hotspot with our rental, and it made is so much easier to keep our loved ones up to date on our trip. Surely that's offered in Scotland too?

I'm happy to talk about the mobile wifi experience...if there is another place you suggest that I put the information let me know.
We rented from Dan Dooley and at the desk they offered a mobile wifi hotspot. I think it was $20/day. We had both gotten an international plan for our phones, but the data amount was minimal. The hotspot was a life saver! We kept it charging as we drove, then when we got out we could throw it in my backpack and take it with us. The signal was really good and worked throughout the majority of the country. I used it to periscope (a video streaming app) from different sites so our friends and family could get on and see what we were seeing in real time. The only issue in Ireland was that it was ONLY good in the Republic. Within feet of the Northern Ireland border the signal died, so we couldn't use it for that part of our trip. We missed having it and will definitely get it in Scotland.
